【브레이크뉴스 포항】박영재 기자=포항시 이강덕 시장이 대한민국대도시시장협의회장 자격으로 3일(현지시간) 영국 런던에서 세계한인경제무역협회(World-OKTA) 런던지회와 청년 해외 진출 및 중소기업 지원을 위한 업무협약(MOU)을 체결했다.

이번 협약은 청년 해외 진출 지원과 글로벌 경제·통상·투자 협력 확대를 목표로 추진됐다. World-OKTA는 전 세계 67개국 146개 지회에서 7천여 명의 CEO와 2만3천여 명의 차세대 경제인이 활동하는 재외동포 기업인 단체로, 글로벌 경제·통상·투자 네트워크를 보유하고 있다. 이번 협약은 지난해 체결한 협약의 연장선상에서 진행됐다.

이 시장은 이번 런던 일정에 앞서 지난 1일과 2일에는 미국 워싱턴 D.C.를 방문해 글로벌 공급 과잉과 50% 고율 관세라는 전례 없는 철강산업 위기 속에서 철강산업 보호와 지역 기업 판로 확대를 위한 현지 행보를 이어갔다. 이번 런던 방문은 청년 해외 진출과 글로벌 경제 협력이라는 새로운 돌파구를 모색하기 위한 행보다.

포항시는 이번 협약을 계기로 국제 경제 활동 참여를 확대하고 청년 해외 진출 지원을 강화할 계획이다. 특히 오는 10월 인천에서 열리는 제29차 세계한인경제인대회에 참가해 포항 청년과 지역 산업을 알리고 국제 네트워크를 넓힐 방침이다.

이창균 World-OKTA 런던지회장은 “이번 협약으로 대한민국 대도시 청년들이 해외로 진출할 수 있는 든든한 교두보가 마련됐다”며 “앞으로도 포항시와 긴밀히 협력하며 공동 발전을 도모하겠다”고 밝혔다.

이강덕 시장은 “이번 교류는 포항과 대한민국 대도시 청년들이 국제 무대에서 경험과 역량을 쌓는 발판이 될 것”이라며 “글로벌 경제, 통상, 투자 분야에서 실질적 성과를 창출하고 이를 지역 경제 활성화로 연결하는 것이 목표”라고 말했다. 이어 “포항 산업과 연계한 국제 경제 협력과 투자 유치에도 힘쓸 계획”이라고 덧붙였다.

한편, 이 시장은 지난 2일 미국 워싱턴 D.C. KOTRA 북미지역본부와 글로벌 정책자문사 DGA Group을 방문해 한국 철강산업의 현실을 설명하고 관세 완화 필요성을 적극 피력하는 등 지역 핵심 산업 보호를 위한 외교 활동도 펼쳤다.

Pohang Mayor Lee Kang-deok Signs MOU with World-OKTA in London to Support Youth Overseas Expansion and SMEs

Pohang Mayor Lee Kang-deok, in his capacity as Chairman of the Korea Metropolitan Mayors' Council, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the World Korean Economic and Trade Association (World-OKTA) London Chapter in London, England, on March 3rd (local time) to support youth overseas expansion and SMEs.

This agreement aims to support youth overseas expansion and expand global economic, trade, and investment cooperation. World-OKTA is an organization of overseas Korean entrepreneurs with over 7,000 CEOs and 23,000 next-generation entrepreneurs active in 146 chapters in 67 countries worldwide. It possesses a global economic, trade, and investment network. This agreement is an extension of the agreement signed last year.

Prior to his London trip, Mayor Lee visited Washington, D.C., on the 1st and 2nd. He continued his local efforts to protect the steel industry and expand sales channels for local businesses amidst the unprecedented steel industry crisis caused by global oversupply and a 50% tariff. This visit to London is part of his efforts to explore new breakthroughs in youth overseas expansion and global economic cooperation.

Pohang City plans to use this agreement as a momentum to expand its participation in international economic activities and strengthen support for youth overseas expansion. In particular, Pohang City plans to participate in the 29th World Korean Business Conference in Incheon in October to promote Pohang youth and local industries and expand its international network.

Lee Chang-kyun, President of World-OKTA London, stated, "This agreement provides a solid bridgehead for young people from major Korean cities to expand overseas. We will continue to work closely with Pohang City to pursue shared growth."

Mayor Lee Kang-deok stated, "This exchange will serve as a stepping stone for young people from Pohang and major Korean cities to gain experience and capabilities on the international stage. The goal is to generate tangible results in the global economy, trade, and investment, and to revitalize the local economy." He added, "We also plan to strive for international economic cooperation and investment attraction linked to Pohang's industries."

Meanwhile, Mayor Lee visited KOTRA's North American headquarters and the global policy consulting firm DGA Group in Washington, D.C., on the 2nd. He explained the current state of the Korean steel industry and actively advocated for tariff relief. He also engaged in diplomatic activities to protect key regional industries.
