【브레이크뉴스 포항】박영재 기자=포항 영일대해수욕장에서 지난 12일부터 14일까지 사흘간 열린 ‘2025 환동해컵 국제요트대회 및 원동컵 국제요트대회’가 성황리에 마무리됐다. 이번 대회를 통해 포항시는 세계적인 해양스포츠 축제 도시로서의 위상을 다시 한번 입증했다.

15일 포항시에 따르면 경북요트협회 주관, 포항시와 경상북도 후원으로 열린 환동해컵 대회는 2022년 첫 개최 이후 매년 성장해온 포항의 대표 해양스포츠 축제다. 올해 4회째를 맞은 이번 대회에는 전 세계 선수들로 구성된 25개 팀이 참가해 딩기요트(LDC2000 일반·선수부)와 킬보트(J70, J24) 등 4개 종목에서 박진감 넘치는 레이스를 펼쳤다.

또한 올해 7회째를 맞은 원동컵 국제요트대회는 중국 청도항만그룹 후원, 청도시 올림픽도시발전촉진회 주최로 열리는 아시아권 최대 규모의 국제 요트대회다. 한국, 중국, 러시아, 미국, 일본, 인도, 호주, 프랑스 등 10개국 100여 명의 선수들이 8개 팀을 구성해 오프쇼어(먼바다)와 인쇼어(해안) 경기를 치렀다. 포항은 지난해에 이어 2년 연속 기항지로 선정돼 환동해권 국제 스포츠 교류의 상징적 무대를 마련했다.

경기 결과 환동해컵 시상식에서는 ▲J70 종목 충청남도 ▲J24 종목 처용팀 ▲LDC2000 선수부 TEAM LEE ▲LDC2000 일반부 TONGSOO가 각각 우승을 차지했다. 원동컵 인쇼어 경기에서는 출전 8개 팀 중 ‘eam Seven Feet Yacht Club’이 정상에 올랐다.

대회 현장에서는 요트 경기 외에도 R.C 체험부스, 리사이클링 용품 판매, 요트 장비 전시 등 다양한 부대 프로그램이 운영돼 시민과 관광객들에게 풍성한 볼거리와 즐길 거리를 제공했다. 또한 포항시는 해외 선수단을 대상으로 스페이스워크, 구룡포, 호미곶광장 등 지역 명소를 연계한 팸투어를 추진하며 지역문화를 알리고 관광산업 활성화에도 기여했다.

이강덕 포항시장은 “스포츠를 통한 국제 교류는 국가 관계 발전에도 중요한 의미가 있다”며 “앞으로 환동해권 해양레저스포츠 중심지로 도약할 수 있도록 인프라 확충에 힘쓰겠다”고 밝혔다.

The Far East Cup International Yacht Race, now in its seventh year, is sponsored by the Qingdao Port Group of China and hosted by the Qingdao Olympic City Development Promotion Association. It is the largest international yacht race in Asia. Approximately 100 sailors from 10 countries, including Korea, China, Russia, the United States, Japan, India, Australia, and France, formed eight teams and competed in offshore and inshore competitions. Pohang was selected as a port of call for the second consecutive year, establishing a symbolic stage for international sports exchange in the East Sea Rim region.

At the East Sea Rim Cup awards ceremony, the following teams won: Chungcheongnam-do in the J70 category; Cheoyong Team in the J24 category; TEAM LEE in the LDC2000 Pro category; and TONGSOO in the LDC2000 General category. In the Far East Cup Inshore competition, the "Eam Seven Feet Yacht Club" emerged victorious among the eight participating teams.

In addition to the yacht races, the competition venue hosted a variety of side programs, including an R.C. experience booth, recycling product sales, and a yacht equipment exhibition, offering a wealth of attractions and entertainment for citizens and tourists. Furthermore, Pohang City organized a familiarization tour for international athletes, linking them to local attractions like Spacewalk, Guryongpo, and Homigot Square, promoting local culture and contributing to the revitalization of the tourism industry.

Mayor Lee Kang-deok of Pohang stated, "International exchange through sports is crucial for the development of national relations. We will continue to expand our infrastructure to help Pohang become a hub for marine leisure sports in the East Sea Rim."
