이번 협약에 따라 양 기관은 ▲방사성폐기물 처분부지 조사·평가 ▲처분 관련 융합·공동연구 ▲연구용 지하연구시설(URL) 기술개발 ▲인력 교류 및 교육 ▲시설·장비 공동 활용 등 다방면에서 협력한다.

특히 심지층 처분 방식의 핵심인 지하 500m 이하 심층처분환경의 장기적 안전성을 과학적으로 연구해, 우리나라 고준위 방폐물 처분 기술의 경쟁력 강화에 힘쓸 계획이다.

조성돈 한국원자력환경공단 이사장은 “공단의 사업 역량과 인프라, 지질자원연구원의 기술개발 성과가 결합해 고준위 방폐물 처분 분야 핵심기술을 확보하고, 사업 신뢰성을 한층 높이는 계기가 될 것”이라고 밝혔다.

Korea Radioactive Waste Agency (KOREA) and Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources (KIGM) Join Forces to Develop High-Level Radioactive Waste Management Technology

On the 17th, the Korea Radioactive Waste Agency (KOREA) (Chairman Cho Sung-don) and the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources (KIGAM) (President Kwon Yi-gyun) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in the conference room of the Low and Intermediate Level Reactor Development Headquarters to strengthen cooperation in the development of high-level radioactive waste management technology.

Under this agreement, the two organizations will collaborate in various areas, including: ▲ surveying and assessing radioactive waste disposal sites; ▲ integrated and joint research related to disposal; ▲ technology development for underground research facilities (URLs); ▲ personnel exchange and training; and ▲ shared use of facilities and equipment.

In particular, they plan to scientifically study the long-term safety of deep geological disposal environments (500 meters or less), a key component of deep geological disposal, thereby strengthening the competitiveness of Korea's high-level radioactive waste disposal technology.

Cho Seong-don, Chairman of the Korea Radioactive Waste Agency, said, “The combination of the Agency’s business capabilities and infrastructure with the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources’ technological development achievements will secure core technologies in the field of high-level radioactive waste disposal and serve as an opportunity to further enhance the reliability of the project.”
