DGIST-Stanford University Develop Privacy-Protecting One-Shot Federated Learning AI Technique

A research team led by Professor Park Sang-hyun of the Department of Robotics and Mechanical and Electronic Engineering at DGIST (President Lee Kun-woo) and researchers at Stanford University have developed a new one-shot federated learning technique that can efficiently train large-scale AI models without sharing personal information.

This achievement holds significant significance in the field of medical image analysis, as it demonstrates the potential for simultaneously securing privacy, learning efficiency, and performance.

Medical image data contains sensitive patient information, making sharing between hospitals highly restricted. Consequently, the development of AI models based on large-scale data has been limited. Federated learning, proposed to address this issue, shares only trained models instead of patient data for collaborative learning. However, repeated transfers are time-consuming and costly. One-shot federated learning has been explored as an alternative, but existing methods suffer from high computational costs and a high risk of overfitting.

Professor Park Sang-hyun's team proposed a method that adds structural noise to synthetic images and generates virtual intermediate samples using a mixup technique. This significantly improved computational efficiency by securing data diversity, reducing overfitting, and reusing synthetic images to minimize unnecessary computation.

The research team applied the technique to various medical image datasets, including radiological images, pathological images, dermatological images, and fundus images, achieving higher accuracy with less computation than the existing one-shot federated learning method.

Professor Park Sang-hyun stated, "This is significant in that it allows us to train an AI model that can be used universally in the medical imaging field, even within realistic constraints such as privacy protection and communication restrictions. We will continue to develop this technique and contribute to the development of accurate and reliable diagnostic assistance systems that encompass diverse patient populations."

Meanwhile, this research was supported by DGIST's general project, the National Research Foundation of Korea's Excellent Young Researcher Project, and the Ministry of Science and ICT's AI Star Fellowship. The results were published in the October issue of Medical Image Analysis, a top international journal in the field of medical image analysis.
