포항해양경찰서는 지난 5일 밤, 암컷대게를 불법으로 잡아 운반하던 A씨(50대)를 현장에서 붙잡고, 그의 차량과 주거지 창고 수족관에서 총 2,324마리의 암컷대게를 발견했다고 7일 밝혔다.

포항해경에 따르면, 5일 오후 10시 9분경 A씨가 암컷대게를 포터 차량에 실어 운반 중이라는 첩보를 입수한 해경은 즉시 구룡포파출소 순찰차를 투입해 현장을 급히 수색했다. 그 결과 차량 내부에서 암컷대게 155마리를 확인했다.

이어 A씨의 주거지에도 불법 어획물이 보관되어 있다는 추가 정보를 확보한 해경은 즉시 현장으로 이동, 창고 내 수족관 2곳에서 무려 2,169마리의 암컷대게를 발견했다. 이들 대게는 총 9개 수족관에 나눠 보관돼 있었던 것으로 알려졌다.

해경은 압수한 암컷대게 2,324마리를 구룡포 연안구조정을 이용해 동방 1해리 해상에서 모두 자연 방류했다.

현재 포항해경은 A씨를 상대로 정확한 사건 경위와 불법 유통 경로 등에 대해 조사를 진행 중이다.

이근안 포항해양경찰서장은 “불법으로 암컷대게를 포획하거나 보관하는 행위는 수산자원을 심각하게 훼손하는 범죄”라며, “철저한 현장 점검과 강력한 단속으로 불법 행위를 근절해 나가겠다”고 강조했다.

한편, 현행 수산자원관리법에 따르면 암컷대게의 포획, 유통, 보관, 판매 등은 엄격히 금지되어 있으며, 이를 위반할 경우 2년 이하의 징역 또는 2천만 원 이하의 벌금형에 처해진다.
