이번 행사는 10월 16일부터 19일까지 3박 4일간 진행되었으며, 경북 동해안이 유네스코 세계지질공원(면적 2,693.69㎢, 포항·경주·영덕·울진)으로 지정된 것을 기념해 마련됐다.

경북도와 포항시, 경주시, 영덕군, 울진군이 공동 기획한 이번 대장정은 세계적 가치의 지질자원을 널리 알리고, 경북 동해안의 자연유산을 체험형 관광 콘텐츠로 발전시키기 위한 취지로 추진됐다.

전국에서 모집된 초등학생을 포함한 가족단위 참가자 60명이 참여해 지질자원의 가치와 경북의 자연유산을 직접 배우고 체험하는 시간을 가졌다.

행사는 경주 코오롱호텔에서 열린 발대식을 시작으로, △경주 골굴암·양남 주상절리 탐방, △포항 흰디기 및 여남동 화석산지 지질탐험, △영덕 해맞이공원·죽도산·메타세쿼이아 숲 트레킹, △울진 왕피천공원·성류굴 탐방 등 전 일정이 전문 해설사와 함께하는 체험형 프로그램으로 진행됐다.

또한 참가 가족들이 함께 참여한 ‘지오 올림피아드: 골든벨을 울려라’에서는 퀴즈를 통해 지질과학의 원리를 쉽고 재미있게 배우며 호응을 얻었다.

특히 이번 대장정은 단순한 답사 프로그램을 넘어, 참가자들이 지역 관광·숙박·식음·체험시설을 이용하고 SNS 인증 미션을 수행하도록 구성된 것이 특징이다.

이 과정에서 자연스럽게 경북 동해안의 지질명소가 홍보되며, ‘지질관광 명소 경북’의 브랜드 이미지 확산에도 긍정적인 효과를 거뒀다는 평가다.

이경곤 경상북도 기후환경국장은 “올해 유네스코 세계지질공원으로 지정된 경북 동해안은 세계적으로도 가치 있는 자연유산을 간직한 지역”이라며

“지질대장정을 통해 경북의 지질명소를 직접 체험하고, 지질유산과 관광이 결합된 지속가능한 관광모델로 발전시켜 나가겠다”고 말했다.

‘2025 경상북도 지질대장정’은 총 4회에 걸쳐 추진되며, 이번 2회차 동해안권 여정은 지난 9월 진행된 1차 섬권(울릉도·독도)에 이어 두 번째 일정이다.

경북도와 공사는 이번 성과를 바탕으로, 내륙권(문경·청송·의성)과 동해안권을 중심으로 한 3·4회차 지질대장정을 오는 11월까지 이어갈 계획이다.

Gyeongsangbuk-do Province Successfully Concludes "2025 Gyeongsangbuk-do Geological Journey" (2nd Round, East Coast Region)

Gyeongsangbuk-do Province and the Gyeongbuk Culture and Tourism Organization (CEO Kim Nam-il, hereinafter referred to as the Organization) announced the successful completion of the 2nd Round (East Coast Region) of the "2025 Gyeongsangbuk-do Geological Journey."

This event, held for four days and three nights from October 16th to 19th, commemorated the designation of the East Coast of Gyeongsangbuk-do as a UNESCO Global Geopark (2,693.69㎢, Pohang, Gyeongju, Yeongdeok, and Uljin).

This expedition, jointly planned by Gyeongsangbuk-do Province, Pohang City, Gyeongju City, Yeongdeok County, and Uljin County, aims to promote the world-class geological resources and develop the natural heritage of the East Coast of Gyeongsangbuk-do into an experiential tourism destination.

Sixty family participants, including elementary school students recruited from across the country, participated and learned firsthand about the value of geological resources and the natural heritage of Gyeongbuk Province.

The event began with a launching ceremony at the Gyeongju Kolon Hotel. The program included a visit to Gyeongju's Golgulam Rock and Yangnam Columnar Joints, a geological exploration of Pohang's Huindiggi and Yeonamdong fossil sites, a trek through Yeongdeok's Sunrise Park, Jukdosan Mountain, and the Metasequoia Forest, and a visit to Uljin's Wangpicheon Park and Seongryugul Cave. The entire program was an experiential program with expert commentators.

Families also participated in "Geo Olympiad: Ring the Golden Bell," where they learned the principles of geological science in an easy and fun way through quizzes, earning a positive response.

This epic expedition was not only a simple field trip, but also included participants utilizing local tourist attractions, accommodations, food and beverage, and experience facilities, as well as completing missions to share their experiences on social media.

This process naturally promoted the geological sites along the Gyeongsangbuk-do East Coast, positively impacting the brand image of "Gyeongsangbuk-do, a geotourism destination."

Lee Gyeong-gon, Director of the Climate and Environment Bureau of Gyeongsangbuk-do Province, stated, "The Gyeongsangbuk-do East Coast, designated as a UNESCO Global Geopark this year, is a region of globally valuable natural heritage."

"Through this geological expedition, we will allow people to experience Gyeongsangbuk-do's geological sites firsthand and develop a sustainable tourism model that combines geological heritage and tourism."

The "2025 Gyeongsangbuk-do Geological Expedition" will be conducted over four itineraries. This second itinerary along the East Coast follows the first itinerary covering islands (Ulleungdo and Dokdo) in September.

Building on this success, Gyeongsangbuk-do Province and the corporation plan to continue the third and fourth itineraries, focusing on the inland areas (Mungyeong, Cheongsong, and Uiseong) and the East Coast, through November.
