2009년 개관한 포항시립미술관은 산업도시 포항의 이미지 속에서도 문화의 숨결을 불어넣은 대표 공공미술관으로, ‘스틸아트(Steel Art)’라는 독자적 브랜드를 중심으로 금속과 예술의 융합을 시도하며 지역 정체성을 예술로 확장해왔다.

포항시는 문화도시 조성의 핵심 사업으로 포항시립미술관 제2관 건립을 본격 추진 중이다. 현 미술관 인근 환호공원 부지에 총사업비 340억 원을 투입해 지상 2층, 연면적 5,881㎡ 규모로 건립되며, 2027년 준공을 목표로 하고 있다.
