이번 방문은 ‘APEC 2025 KOREA’와 연계해 글로벌녹색성장기구(GGGI)가 주관한 ‘한·중·일+ASEAN 기후 협력 세션’ 이후 진행됐다. 대표단은 포스코 역사관과 제철소 공정 라인을 둘러보며 철강산업의 중심지에서 녹색성장 도시로 전환 중인 포항의 변화에 깊은 관심을 보였다.

이날 시찰에는 즈시 슈지 한·중·일 협력사무국(TCS) 사무차장, 키앗차이 마이트리웡 태국 상원의원, 다카시 혼고 국제배출권거래협회(IETA) 이사회 위원, 수바티라이 시바쿠마란 UN ESCAP 개발재원국장, 에이탄 렌코 바운드리스 재단 CEO, 소냐 메디나 CIFF 생태계 전략 총괄 등 국제기구 및 주요 재단 관계자 30여 명이 함께했다.

이강덕 포항시장은 “포항은 오랜 기간 철강산업을 기반으로 성장해 왔지만, 이제는 탄소중립과 녹색성장을 향해 나아가고 있다”며 “올해 처음 개최한 세계녹색성장포럼(WGGF)을 통해 글로벌 녹색성장 의제를 선도하는 도시로 도약하고 있다”고 말했다.

이어 “이번 방문은 이차전지와 수소 산업 등 신성장 산업 육성, 그린웨이 프로젝트, 생태하천 복원 등 녹색 도시재생을 추진하는 포항이 세계 각국과 기후 위기에 공동 대응하고 지속 가능한 미래를 만들어가는 뜻깊은 계기가 될 것”이라며 “국제 파트너들과의 협력을 강화해 포항의 녹색성장 경험을 세계와 공유하겠다”고 환영사를 전했다.

포항시는 이번 대표단 방문을 계기로 GGGI, TCS, IETA, CIFF 등 주요 국제기구와의 협력 네트워크를 한층 강화하고, 향후 국제기구 총회 및 포럼의 포항 개최를 제안했다.

시는 특히 2026년 세계녹색성장포럼(WGGF)과 2027년 ICLEI 세계총회 등 대규모 국제행사 개최를 통해 산업도시에서 녹색성장 선도도시로의 전환을 가속화하고, 기후변화 대응을 위한 글로벌 협력의 거점 도시로 자리매김한다는 계획이다.

Mayor Lee Kang-deok of Pohang said, "Pohang has long grown based on its steel industry, but is now moving toward carbon neutrality and green growth. Through the World Green Growth Forum (WGGF), which we hosted for the first time this year, we are making a leap forward as a city leading the global green growth agenda."

He continued, "This visit will be a meaningful opportunity for Pohang, which is promoting green urban regeneration through the fostering of new growth industries such as secondary batteries and hydrogen, the Greenway Project, and the restoration of ecological streams, to jointly respond to the climate crisis with countries around the world and create a sustainable future." He added, "We will strengthen cooperation with international partners and share Pohang's green growth experience with the world."

The Pohang City Government used this delegation's visit as an opportunity to further strengthen its cooperative network with major international organizations such as the GGGI, TCS, IETA, and CIFF, and proposed hosting future international organization general meetings and forums in Pohang.

The city plans to accelerate its transition from an industrial city to a leading green growth city by hosting large-scale international events such as the 2026 World Green Growth Forum (WGGF) and the 2027 ICLEI World Congress, and to establish itself as a hub for global cooperation on climate change response.
