증차 운행은 단풍 관광객이 몰릴 것으로 예상되는 11월 첫째·둘째 주 주말(11월 1~2일, 8~9일)에 진행되며, 기존 20대에서 22대로 2대를 늘려 운행할 예정이다.

이번 증차는 이용 수요가 많은 동대구역~동화사 구간에 집중된다. 이에 따라 급행1번 노선의 주말 운행 횟수는 162회에서 190회로 17.3% 증가하고, 배차간격은 기존 13분에서 10~11분으로 단축돼 최대 23.1% 줄어든다.

현재 팔공산에는 동화사 방면(급행1번·팔공1번), 갓바위 방면(401번), 파계사 방면(101번·101-1번), 맞춤노선(팔공2번·팔공3번) 등 총 7개 시내버스 노선이 운행되고 있다. 특히 팔공2번과 팔공3번은 행락철인 3~11월 주말과 공휴일에 맞춤형으로 운영돼 방문객들의 교통편의를 높이고 있다.

지난해 단풍철 3주간 급행1번 이용객은 연평균 대비 21.6% 증가했으며, 대구시는 올해도 비슷한 수준의 수요가 예상된다고 밝혔다. 시는 단풍철 교통 혼잡을 완화하고 시민과 관광객들에게 보다 쾌적한 대중교통 서비스를 제공한다는 방침이다.
