특히 그는 신공항 이전 문제의 전략적 중요성을 강조하며 “지방선거를 앞두고 지역 주요 인사들과 국회의원들이 한자리에 모여 결정을 내려야 한다. 그동안 논의가 명확하지 않았던 점이 문제”라고 지적했다.

그러면서 “TK 지역의 중대한 현안인 만큼, 이재명 대통령이 직접 관심을 갖고 결단해야 할 필요가 있다”고 목소리를 높였다. 윤석열 정부 시절에는 잠잠했던 이 문제가 현 정부 들어 새로운 접근과 강력한 리더십을 요구받고 있다는 해석이다.

홍 전 의원은 또한 홍준표 전 대구시장을 언급하며 “홍 전 시장 재임 시 신공항 논의는 활발했지만, 구체적 실행 계획은 부족했다”고 평가했다.

이어 “과거 논쟁에 머무르기보다는 이제 지역 정치권과 중앙정부가 실질적인 방안을 마련하고, 신속하게 미래를 대비해야 할 시점”이라고 강조했다.

이번 홍 전 의원의 발언은 신공항 이전 문제의 복잡성과 시급성을 다시 한번 부각시키며, 지역 발전을 위한 중대한 결단을 더 이상 늦춰선 안 된다는 입장을 확고히 한 것으로 풀이된다.
