【브레이크뉴스 경북】진예솔 기자=경북교육청(교육감 임종식)은 7일 학령인구 감소와 지방 소멸이 교육계의 핵심 과제로 떠오른 가운데, 지역과 함께 성장하는 ‘정주학교’ 모델을 통해 지속 가능한 미래학교 체계를 구축하고 있다고 밝혔다.

경북교육청은 지난 1년간 도내 초·중·고 9개 학교를 대상으로 ‘정주학교 시범운영’을 추진해왔다. 정주학교는 교육을 이유로 지역을 떠나는 흐름을 막고, 오히려 교육을 위해 지역으로 찾아오는 학교를 만들겠다는 목표 아래 전국에서 처음으로 시도된 사업이다.

시범학교들은 지역 여건에 맞춘 창의적 교육과정과 지역 특화 프로그램을 운영하고, 학부모·지역사회 참여를 확대하며 학교의 자생력을 높이는 데 집중했다. 이를 통해 ‘학교가 지역 중심이 되는 모델’이 실제 가능하다는 초기 성과도 확인됐다.

경북교육청은 올해 말까지 시범운영 성과와 한계를 종합 진단하는 ‘정주학교 평가’를 실시할 예정이다. 평가는 단순한 성적 확인을 넘어, 정주학교가 지속 가능한 미래학교로 자리잡을 수 있는지 검증하는 과정으로 진행된다. 외부 전문가가 참여하는 현장평가, 정량·정성 분석을 포함해 공정성과 전문성을 강화한 체계로 운영된다.

평가 결과는 우수 사례 확산, 정책 보완, 2026학년도 본 사업 대상학교 선정 등에 활용된다. 경북교육청은 향후 4년간 정주학교 본 사업을 본격 추진해 지역 기반 미래학교 모델을 구체화한다는 방침이다.

임종식 교육감은 “정주학교는 지역을 떠나는 교육이 아니라, 지역을 살리는 교육으로 나아가기 위한 경북형 해법”이라며 “종합 평가를 통해 사업을 더욱 탄탄하게 만들고, 지역과 학교가 함께 살아나는 교육 생태계를 구축하겠다”고 말했다.

The evaluation goes beyond simple performance verification to verify whether Jeongju School can establish itself as a sustainable future school. The system, which includes on-site evaluations by external experts and quantitative and qualitative analyses, enhances fairness and professionalism.

The evaluation results will be used to disseminate best practices, improve policies, and select schools for the 2026 school year. The Gyeongbuk Office of Education plans to fully implement the Jeongju School project over the next four years, solidifying the model for a regionally-based future school.

Superintendent Lim Jong-sik stated, "Jeongju School is not an education program that abandons the region, but rather a Gyeongbuk-style solution that fosters regional revitalization." He added, "Through comprehensive evaluation, we will further strengthen the project and build an educational ecosystem where both the region and the school thrive together."
