【브레이크뉴스 포항】박영재 기자=아시아태평양이론물리센터(APCTP)가 주관한 ‘2025 아태이론물리센터 국제컨퍼런스’가 18일 포항 라한호텔에서 열렸다.

이번 행사는 사사키 미사오 신임 소장의 취임을 기념해 ‘근본 물리학으로서의 우주론’을 주제로 진행됐으며, 세계적 우주론·중력이론 석학들이 대거 참여해 최신 연구 성과를 공유했다.

컨퍼런스에는 천 피신 타이완대 석좌교수, 수냐예프 라시드 막스플랑크 천체물리연구소 명예소장, 알렉산더 쿠센코 UCLA 교수 등 세계적 연구자 14명이 연사로 나섰다. 

이들은 국내 연구진과 청년 과학자들을 대상으로 우주론 분야의 최신 연구 동향을 소개하고, 국제 공동연구 및 후속 협력 방안에 대해 논의했다. 참석자들은 포항이 갖춘 기초과학 연구 환경을 높이 평가한 것으로 알려졌다.

행사에서는 초기 우주 물리, 암흑물질, 블랙홀, 인플레이션 등 현대 우주론의 핵심 주제가 폭넓게 다뤄졌다. 관측 결과와 이론 연구를 연계한 다양한 발표가 이어지며 우주의 기원과 구조, 입자물리와 우주론의 접점에 대한 최신 연구 흐름이 공유됐다.

이강덕 포항시장은 환영사에서 “포항은 아태이론물리센터와 막스플랑크연구소가 뿌리내린 기초과학 중심 도시”라며 “이 같은 연구 기반은 아·태 AI 센터 유치에도 중요한 경쟁력이 될 것”이라고 말했다.

한편 APCTP는 1996년 설립된 국내 유일의 국제이론물리 연구기관으로, 현재 19개 회원국과 공동연구 및 젊은 연구자 교류 프로그램을 운영하고 있다. 포항시는 이번 국제컨퍼런스를 계기로 기초과학과 AI 연구를 잇는 아시아·태평양 협력 도시로 도약하기 위한 국제적 공감대를 더욱 확대한다는 계획이다.

World-renowned scholars gather in Pohang… Asia Pacific Center for Theoretical Physics successfully concludes ‘2025 International Conference’

The ‘2025 Asia Pacific Center for Theoretical Physics International Conference,’ hosted by the Asia Pacific Center for Theoretical Physics (APCTP), was held on the 18th at the Lahan Hotel in Pohang.

The event, themed “Cosmology as Fundamental Physics,” commemorated the inauguration of new Director Misao Sasaki. A number of leading cosmologists and gravitational theory scholars participated and shared their latest research findings.

Fourteen world-renowned researchers, including Professor Pi-Shin Chen of National Taiwan University, Honorary Director Rashid Sunyaev of the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics, and Professor Alexander Kusenko of UCLA, spoke at the conference.

They introduced the latest research trends in cosmology to domestic researchers and young scientists and discussed international joint research and follow-up collaborations. Participants reportedly praised Pohang’s basic science research environment.

The event broadly covered core topics in modern cosmology, including early cosmology, dark matter, black holes, and inflation. Various presentations linked observational results with theoretical research, sharing the latest research trends on the origin and structure of the universe, and the intersection of particle physics and cosmology.

In his welcoming address, Pohang Mayor Lee Kang-deok stated, "Pohang is a city centered on basic science, where the Asia-Pacific Center for Theoretical Physics and the Max Planck Institute for Theoretical Physics have taken root. This research foundation will also be a key competitive advantage in attracting the Asia-Pacific AI Center."

Founded in 1996, the APCTP is Korea's only international theoretical physics research institute. It currently operates joint research and young researcher exchange programs with 19 member countries. Pohang plans to use this international conference as an opportunity to further expand international consensus and leap forward as an Asia-Pacific cooperative city bridging basic science and AI research.
