이번 청원은 초고령사회 진입으로 무임수송 인원이 급증하며 도시철도 운영기관의 재정 부담이 한계에 다다른 상황을 국민에게 알리고, 국비 지원 논의를 본격화하기 위해 제기됐다. 국민 동의 5만 명을 넘어선 만큼 해당 안건은 국회 소관 상임위원회에 회부돼 법제화 논의가 진행될 예정이다.

청원 달성을 위해 6개 기관은 노사 합동으로 홈페이지와 역내 홍보물 게시, 인증 캠페인 등 다양한 홍보 활동을 펼쳤으며, 도시철도 주요 역에서 대시민 캠페인을 통해 국민청원 참여를 독려했다.

대구교통공사 김기혁 사장은 “국민 청원 5만 명 돌파는 도시철도 무임수송 국비 보전에 대한 국민적 지지를 보여주는 것”이라며, “국회와 정부가 국민의 목소리에 응답해 국비 보전 법안 통과를 위해 노력해주길 바란다”고 말했다.
