재단법인 포항국제전시컨벤션센터(대표이사 송남운)는 26일 라한호텔 포항에서 ‘포항 글로벌 관광 MICE 포럼’을 열고 MICE 전문가, 업계 관계자, 시민 등 100여 명과 함께 포항형 MICE 산업의 비전과 전략을 논의했다.

포럼은 동국대학교 호텔관광경영학과 최정자 교수의 기조강연으로 시작됐다. 최 교수는 ‘동해안 허브, 포항의 새로운 패러다임: MICE를 통한 지속가능한 발전’을 주제로 “포항은 철강 중심 경제 구조의 전환기에 있으며, MICE 산업은 도시 재생과 활력 회복을 이끌 핵심 동력”이라고 강조했다. 또한 지방소멸 시대의 MICE 산업은 단순 방문객 유치가 아니라 지역과 지속적으로 관계를 맺는 ‘관계 인구’를 확장하는 전략이 필요하다고 제언했다.

이어진 세션에서는 여호근(동의대)·최성은(경북대)·임선희(신경주대) 교수가 글로벌 MICE 시장 트렌드와 포항의 거시 환경을 분석하며 성공적인 시장 안착 전략을 제시했다. 이들은 특히 시민 참여 기반의 지역 친화형 MICE 생태계 구축이 중요하다고 강조했다.

또한 박상희(계명대)·장영화(대구대)·유송희(한동대) 교수는 포항의 첨단산업, 해양 자원, 도시 문화 등 지역 고유 자산을 특화 콘텐츠로 연계하는 ‘포항형 MICE 모델’을 제안했다. 산업 유산을 공간 콘텐츠로 발전시켜 도시 전체를 MICE 플랫폼화하는 전략도 소개됐다.

송남운 POEX 대표이사는 “이번 포럼을 통해 얻은 분석과 전략을 체계화해 개관 준비를 더욱 가속화할 것”이라며 “내년부터 포럼을 정례화해 MICE 정책 논의와 산업 기반 구축을 지속 추진하겠다”고 밝혔다.

장상길 포항시 부시장은 “논의된 전략을 실행 계획으로 구체화해 지역 경제 활성화와 고부가가치 일자리 창출로 이어지도록 하겠다”며 “POEX 개관 준비에 만전을 기하겠다”고 말했다.

Pohang City Launches MICE Industry Strategy Ahead of POEX Opening

Pohang City is accelerating preparations by fleshing out a growth strategy for the local MICE industry ahead of the official opening of the Pohang International Exhibition and Convention Center (POEX), scheduled for 2027.

The Pohang International Exhibition and Convention Center Foundation (CEO Song Nam-woon) held the "Pohang Global Tourism MICE Forum" at the Lahan Hotel Pohang on the 26th. Approximately 100 participants, including MICE experts, industry officials, and citizens, discussed the vision and strategies for Pohang's MICE industry.

The forum began with a keynote speech by Professor Choi Jeong-ja of Dongguk University's Department of Hotel and Tourism Management. Under the theme "East Coast Hub, Pohang's New Paradigm: Sustainable Development through MICE," Professor Choi emphasized, "Pohang is at a turning point in its steel-centric economic structure, and the MICE industry is a key driver of urban regeneration and revitalization." He also suggested that the MICE industry in this era of local extinction requires strategies that expand the "relationship population" that maintains ongoing relationships with the region, rather than simply attracting visitors.

In the following session, Professors Yeo Ho-geun (Dong-eui University), Choi Seong-eun (Kyungpook National University), and Lim Seon-hee (Shin Gyeongju University) analyzed global MICE market trends and Pohang's macroeconomic environment, presenting strategies for successful market establishment. They particularly emphasized the importance of building a community-friendly MICE ecosystem based on citizen participation.

Furthermore, Professors Park Sang-hee (Keimyung University), Jang Yeong-hwa (Daegu University), and Yoo Song-hee (Handong Global University) proposed the "Pohang MICE Model," which links Pohang's unique assets, such as advanced industries, marine resources, and urban culture, into specialized content. They also introduced a strategy to transform the entire city into a MICE platform by developing industrial heritage into spatial content.

Song Nam-woon, CEO of POEX, stated, "We will systematize the analysis and strategies gained from this forum to further accelerate preparations for the opening. Starting next year, we will hold the forum regularly to continue discussing MICE policies and building an industrial foundation."

Jang Sang-gil, Vice Mayor of Pohang City, stated, "We will concretize the discussed strategies into action plans to revitalize the local economy and create high-value-added jobs. We will make every effort to prepare for the opening of POEX."
