국내 K-배터리 소재 업체 가운데 유럽 현지에 생산 거점을 확보한 것은 이번이 최초로, 에코프로는 이를 기반으로 유럽 시장 공략에 본격 나선다는 계획이다.

에코프로는 지난 11월 28일(현지 시간) 헝가리 데브레첸에서 공장 준공식을 개최했다고 30일 밝혔다. 

행사에는 이동채 에코프로 창업주, 송호준 에코프로 대표, 최문호 에코프로비엠 대표 등 에코프로 그룹 주요 경영진과 이스트반 요 헝가리투자청(HIPA) 청장, 왕민 GEM 부회장, 이석희 SK온 사장 등 글로벌 관련 기업 관계자들이 참석했다.

이동채 창업주는 기념사에서 “헝가리 정부의 빠르고 체계적인 지원이 없었다면 2023년 착공 후 3년 만에 한국 양극재 기업 최초의 유럽 생산기지를 세울 수 없었을 것”이라며 “이번 준공은 변화하는 유럽 전기차 시장에서 에코프로가 현지와 함께 미래를 구축하는 시작점”이라고 강조했다.

데브레첸 공장은 약 44만㎡ 규모 부지에 조성됐으며, 양극재 생산을 담당하는 에코프로비엠을 비롯해 리튬 가공을 수행하는 에코프로이노베이션, 산업용 산소 및 질소를 공급하는 에코프로에이피 등이 입주했다.

초기 양극재 생산 규모는 연간 5만4000톤으로 전기차 약 60만 대에 공급할 수 있는 수준이다. 이와 함께 연간 8000톤 규모의 수산화리튬 생산 설비, 시간당 1만6000㎥ 산소 공급 설비도 구축됐다. 에코프로는 향후 단계적 증설을 통해 양극재 총 생산량을 연간 10만8000톤까지 확대한다는 계획이다.

내년부터는 NCA, NCM 등 하이니켈 삼원계 소재 양산에 들어가며, 중장기적으로 미드니켈 및 LFP 등 중저가 제품군까지 제품 포트폴리오를 확장할 예정이다.

이번 공장 준공은 EU 핵심원자재법(CRMA) 시행과 영국-유럽 무역협정(TCA) 발효 시점과 맞물려 현지 배터리 및 완성차 기업들의 관심을 끌 것으로 예상된다. 규제 강화로 배터리 소재의 역내 생산이 요구되는 상황에서 에코프로의 현지 생산체계 구축은 신규 고객 확보에 유리하게 작용할 전망이다.

헝가리는 삼성SDI, SK온, CATL 등 글로벌 배터리 셀 기업뿐 아니라 BMW 등 완성차 업체의 생산 기지가 집중된 유럽 내 대표 배터리 산업 허브다. 에코프로는 인도네시아 제련공장에서 공급받는 저가 니켈과 자동화 기반 제조 효율화를 통해 원가 경쟁력을 확보했다는 설명이다.

에코프로는 공장 가동과 함께 현지 인재 채용 및 육성에도 속도를 낼 방침이다. 지역 기술학교 및 직업훈련기관과 협력해 교육–채용 연계 프로그램을 운영하는 등 ‘동반 성장’ 기반의 현지화 전략을 추진하고 있다.

한편 에코프로는 준공식 전날인 27일 부다페스트에서 한국–헝가리 문화교류 행사 및 전야제를 열고 현지 이해관계자들과 소통의 시간을 가졌다.

EcoPro Completes Construction of Europe's First Cathode Materials Factory in Debrecen, Hungary, Commences Commercial Production

Battery materials company EcoPro has completed construction of its cathode materials production plant in Debrecen, Hungary, and commenced commercial production.

This marks the first time a Korean K-battery materials company has established a production base in Europe, and EcoPro plans to leverage this facility to actively advance into the European market.

EcoPro announced on the 30th that it held a completion ceremony for its plant in Debrecen, Hungary, on November 28th (local time).

The event was attended by key EcoPro Group executives, including EcoPro Founder Lee Dong-chae, EcoPro CEO Song Ho-jun, and EcoPro BM CEO Choi Moon-ho, as well as representatives from global companies, including Istvan Jo, Chairman of the Hungarian Investment Agency (HIPA), Wang Min, Vice Chairman of GEM, and Lee Seok-hee, President of SK On.

In his commemorative speech, founder Lee Dong-chae emphasized, "Without the Hungarian government's swift and systematic support, we would not have been able to establish the first European production base for a Korean cathode materials company in just three years after groundbreaking in 2023." He added, "This completion marks the starting point for EcoPro to build a future together with the local community in the evolving European electric vehicle market."

The Debrecen plant, built on a site of approximately 440,000 square meters, houses EcoPro BM, which produces cathode materials; EcoPro Innovation, which processes lithium; and EcoPro AP, which supplies industrial oxygen and nitrogen.

The initial cathode materials production capacity is 54,000 tons per year, enough to supply approximately 600,000 electric vehicles. Additionally, facilities for producing lithium hydroxide with an annual capacity of 8,000 tons and an oxygen supply facility with an hourly capacity of 16,000 cubic meters have been built. EcoPro plans to gradually expand its total cathode materials production capacity to 108,000 tons per year.

Starting next year, the company will begin mass production of high-nickel ternary materials such as NCA and NCM, and plans to expand its product portfolio to include mid-nickel and low- to mid-priced products such as LFP in the mid- to long-term.

The completion of this plant is expected to attract interest from local battery and automakers, as it coincides with the implementation of the EU's Core Materials Regulation (CRMA) and the UK-EU Trade Agreement (TCA). With tightening regulations necessitating the production of battery materials within the region, EcoPro's establishment of a local production system is expected to be advantageous in securing new customers.

Hungary is a leading battery industry hub in Europe, home to production facilities for global battery cell companies such as Samsung SDI, SK On, and CATL, as well as automakers like BMW. EcoPro explains that it has secured cost competitiveness through low-cost nickel sourced from an Indonesian smelter and automated manufacturing efficiency.

Along with the plant's operation, EcoPro plans to accelerate the recruitment and development of local talent. The company is pursuing a localization strategy based on "shared growth," including operating education-recruitment programs in partnership with local technical schools and vocational training institutions.

Meanwhile, on the 27th, the day before the completion ceremony, EcoPro held a Korea-Hungary cultural exchange event and pre-event in Budapest, engaging in communication with local stakeholders.
