대구시에 따르면 올해 10월 기준 시가 운영 중인 무인단속장비는 909대로, 2021년(556대)과 비교해 1.6배 가까이 증가했다. 장비 수는 2022년 669대, 2023년 769대, 2024년 877대로 매년 가파르게 늘었다.

이에 따라 예산 부담도 확대됐다. 특히 지방비 부담이 큰 유지관리비는 2021년 108억 원이었으나, 2024년에는 180억 원으로 늘었다. 2025년도 연간 집계는 아직 나오지 않았지만, 올해 10월까지 이미 상당 수준의 지방비가 소요된 것으로 알려졌다. 반면 국비 지원은 매년 본청에서 일괄 배정되는 방식으로 2021년 14억 9천만 원, 2022년 19억 8천만 원, 2023년 20억 4천만 원, 2024년 21억 원에 그쳤다.

단속 실적도 큰 폭으로 증가했다. 대구시 무인단속장비에 적발된 건수는 2021년 46만 3천여 건에서 2022년 85만 9천여 건으로 두 배에 가까워졌다. 2023년에는 79만 8천여 건, 올해는 10월까지 58만여 건이 적발됐다. 특히 올해 2월부터 이륜차 단속 장비가 본격 가동되면서 이륜차 단속 건수도 2만 건에 육박한다.

시 관계자는 “무인단속장비 확대는 시민 안전을 위한 불가피한 조치”라면서도 “지속적으로 늘어나는 지방비 부담을 감안하면 제도 개선 논의가 필요하다”고 말했다.
