【브레이크뉴스 포항】박영재 기자=포항시는 2일 서울 대한상공회의소에서 열린 ‘제1회 동아시아 기후대화(EACD 2025)’에 참석해 국내외 기후·외교 리더들과 교류하며 지역 산업의 녹색전환 전략을 국제사회에 공식적으로 알렸다고 밝혔다.

이번 회의는 (재)기후변화센터가 파리협정 10주년을 맞아 개최한 국제 행사로, 제30차 유엔기후변화협약 당사국총회(COP30) 이후 각국이 2035년 국가온실가스감축목표(NDC) 제출을 앞둔 시점에서 글로벌 기후 체제의 향후 이행 방향을 논의하기 위해 마련됐다.

행사에는 최재철 기후변화센터 이사장, 필립 베르투 주한 프랑스대사, 마르시아 도네르 아브레우 주한 브라질대사, 정기용 전 기후변화대사 등 국내외 외교·산업·학계 관계자들이 참석해 글로벌 기후외교 전략, 파리협정 이행 현황, 지방정부와 산업계의 역할 등을 주제로 심층 논의를 이어갔다.

포항시는 이 자리에서 기후외교 강화, 산업 구조 전환, 국제 협력 네트워크 확대를 핵심 전략으로 제시했다. 특히 철강·배터리·수소산업 기반을 활용한 도시형 녹색산업 모델을 소개하며 “기후위기 대응은 지역 산업의 생존전략이자 새로운 성장 기회”라고 강조했다.

이어 열린 고위급 정책 대화 세션에서는 포항의 기후 정책 추진 현황과 산업전환 로드맵을 국제 파트너십과 연계하는 방향이 논의됐으며, 포항시의 글로벌 협력 확대 가능성을 확인하는 계기가 됐다.

패널토론에 참여한 손영욱 철강산업연구원장은 “포항의 CCU(탄소포집·활용) 메가프로젝트는 지역 산업 생태계 혁신은 물론, 국제 탄소중립 시장에서 새로운 경쟁력을 확보할 핵심 사업”이라며 “정부 차원의 재정 지원 확대와 청년 세대의 정책 참여 체계 구축이 필요하다”고 말했다.

이강덕 포항시장은 “이번 기후대화는 포항이 추진 중인 녹색산업 전략을 국제사회에 처음으로 공식 제시한 의미 있는 자리"라며 “국제기구·산업계·정부와의 협력 네트워크를 지속 확대해 포항을 글로벌 그린산업 선도 도시로 도약시키겠다”고 밝혔다.

Pohang City announced that it attended the '1st East Asia Climate Dialogue (EACD 2025)' held at the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Seoul on the 2nd. It interacted with domestic and international climate and diplomacy leaders and officially announced the regional industry's green transition strategy to the international community.

This meeting, an international event hosted by the Climate Change Center to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Paris Agreement, was designed to discuss the future direction of the global climate regime as each country prepares to submit its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) for 2035 following the 30th Conference of the Parties (COP30) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

The event was attended by domestic and international figures from diplomacy, industry, and academia, including Choi Jae-cheol, Chairman of the Climate Change Center; Ambassador of France to Korea Philippe Berthoud; Ambassador of Brazil to Korea Marcia Donaire Abreu; and former Ambassador for Climate Change Chung Ki-yong. The event engaged in in-depth discussions on topics such as global climate diplomacy strategies, the current status of implementation of the Paris Agreement, and the roles of local governments and industry.

Pohang City presented its core strategies: strengthening climate diplomacy, transforming its industrial structure, and expanding its international cooperation network. In particular, it introduced an urban green industry model leveraging its steel, battery, and hydrogen industries, emphasizing that "responding to the climate crisis is both a survival strategy for local industries and a new growth opportunity."

Following this, a high-level policy dialogue session discussed the current status of Pohang's climate policy implementation and ways to link its industrial transformation roadmap with international partnerships. This served as an opportunity to confirm the potential for Pohang to expand its global cooperation.

Son Young-wook, Director of the Korea Iron and Steel Research Institute, who participated in the panel discussion, stated, "Pohang's Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) megaproject is a key project that will not only revolutionize the local industrial ecosystem but also secure new competitiveness in the international carbon-neutral market." He added, "We need expanded government-level financial support and the establishment of a system for the younger generation to participate in policy."

Lee Kang-deok, Mayor of Pohang, stated, "This climate dialogue is a meaningful opportunity to officially present Pohang's green industry strategy to the international community for the first time. We will continue to expand our cooperative network with international organizations, industry, and governments to help Pohang become a leading global green industry city."
