시는 지난 2일 서울 GGGI 본부에서 가입증서 전달식을 열고 NFG의 첫 회원 도시로 이름을 올렸다. NFG는 GGGI가 내년 출범시키는 글로벌 협력 플랫폼으로, 국가·도시·기업이 참여해 저탄소 산업 전환, 기후 대응 프로젝트, 지식 공유 등을 추진하는 네트워크다.

김상협 GGGI 사무총장은 전달식에서 “포항은 기후 대응과 지속가능성 분야에서 강한 실행력을 보여준 도시”라며 “NFG 가입은 국제사회가 요구하는 미래형 녹색도시 모델로서 의미가 크다”고 말했다.

이에 이강덕 포항시장은 “철강 중심 산업 구조를 넘어 수소·재생에너지·탄소저감 기술 기반 산업으로 확장하며 기후대응형 경제도시로 전환하고 있다”며 “이번 가입은 포항이 글로벌 녹색성장 논의의 참여자가 아닌 협력의 주체로 나서는 출발점”이라고 강조했다.

이 시장은 또 “내년은 파리협정 채택 10주년이자 향상된 2035 국가온실가스감축목표(NDC) 제출이 진행되는 중요한 해”라며 “국제 사회에서 지방정부·기업 기여를 의미하는 글로벌결정기여(GDC)가 핵심 의제로 떠오르는 만큼 포항도 국제적 책임 이행에 적극 나서겠다”고 밝혔다.

포항시는 이번 가입을 계기로 GGGI와 ▲녹색성장·기후 회복력 프로젝트 공동 개발 ▲탄소흡수원 확충 및 온실가스 감축 협력 ▲지속가능 도시 전환을 위한 국제 지식 교류 ▲민·관 기후 대응 파트너십 확대 ▲세계녹색성장포럼 공동 추진 ▲지역 청년 대상 국제기구 인턴십 운영 등을 추진할 계획이다.

포항시는 “이번 가입은 도시 이미지 변화뿐 아니라 국제 네트워크 기반의 정책 실험과 사업 유치 기회로 이어질 것”이라며 “녹색성장 도시로서 실효적 성과를 만들겠다”고 밝혔다.

Pohang City Becomes First City to Join the Global Green Growth Institute (NFG)… “Declares Green Transition City”

Pohang City has officially joined the New Frontier Group (NFG), a new cooperative body of the international organization Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI). This is the first local government in Korea to join, and Pohang's policy direction, which has transformed from an industrial-based city to a leading green growth city, is recognized internationally.

On the 2nd, the city held a certificate of membership ceremony at the GGGI headquarters in Seoul and was named the first member city of the NFG. Pohang Mayor Lee Kang-deok emphasized, "We are moving beyond our steel-centric industrial structure to hydrogen, renewable energy, and carbon reduction technology-based industries, transforming into a climate-responsive economic city." He added, "This membership marks the starting point for Pohang to emerge as a collaborator, not just a participant, in the global green growth discussion."

The mayor also stated, "Next year marks the 10th anniversary of the adoption of the Paris Agreement, and is a crucial year for submitting the enhanced 2035 Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). As the Globally Determined Contributions (GDCs), representing the contributions of local governments and businesses, emerge as a key agenda in the international community, Pohang will also actively fulfill its international responsibilities."

With this membership, Pohang plans to pursue the following initiatives with the GGGI: joint development of green growth and climate resilience projects; cooperation on expanding carbon sinks and reducing greenhouse gases; international knowledge exchange for sustainable urban transformation; expansion of public-private climate response partnerships; joint promotion of the World Green Growth Forum; and internship programs with international organizations for local youth.

Pohang City stated, "This membership will not only transform the city's image, but also lead to policy experiments and business attraction opportunities based on international networks. We will achieve tangible results as a green growth city."
