특히 최근 음주운전 차량에 외국인 관광객이 치여 사망하는 사건이 발생해 사회적 공분이 커지면서 “특단의 대책이 필요하다”는 목소리도 높아졌다. 이에 경찰은 올해도 12월 1일부터 내년 1월 31일까지 두 달간 전국적으로 음주운전 특별단속 기간을 운영한다.

경찰은 위험지역을 중심으로 단속 지점을 수시로 옮기며 주·야간을 가리지 않는 ‘스팟식 단속’을 집중 시행한다. 일제 단속과 함께 음주 의심 차량을 선별해 단속하는 방식도 병행해 상시 단속 체제를 구축한다는 계획이다.

음주운전 차량 동승자에 대한 책임도 강화된다. 경찰은 방조·교사 혐의가 확인될 경우 동승자도 처벌할 방침이다. 또 중대 음주운전 사망사고와 상습 음주운전자의 차량은 2023년 7월부터 시행 중인 제도에 따라 적극 압수·몰수해 재범 가능성을 원천 봉쇄한다.

음주운전 사고는 특가법상 ‘위험운전치사상죄’ 적용으로 가중 처벌된다. 경찰 관계자는 “연말연시 분위기에 휩싸여 음주운전이 반복돼서는 안 된다”며 “단속을 피하기 어렵다는 인식이 확고히 자리잡을 수 있도록 강도 높은 단속을 이어갈 것”이라고 말했다.
