경주시는 5일 동천동에서 황성동까지 이어지는 옛 동해남부선 폐선부지에 조성된 ‘도시바람길숲 임시산책로’를 전날 시민과 함께 점검했다고 밝혔다. 이번 현장 점검에는 주낙영 시장을 비롯해 시의원, 통장, 지역 주민 등 50여 명이 참석했다.

점검은 동천동 761번지에서 시작해 황성동 512-1번지 옛 철길 건널목까지 약 30분 동안 진행됐으며, 참석자들은 산책로 구간을 직접 걸으며 조성 현황과 향후 추진 계획을 공유했다.

1918년 개통한 동해남부선은 2021년 폐선될 때까지 약 100년 동안 경주 도심을 관통했다. 이 기간 열차 소음과 분진, 도시 단절, 폐기물 방치 등의 문제로 주민 불편이 지속되면서 정비 필요성이 꾸준히 제기돼 왔다.

경주시는 임시산책로 조성 과정에서 폐선부지에 장기간 쌓여 있던 폐기물 약 198t을 수거했다. 이는 당초 예상치의 두 배 규모로, 시는 “누적된 환경 문제를 해결해 도시숲 조성 기반을 마련했다”고 설명했다.

시는 내년까지 남아 있는 불법 경작지와 미철거 시설 등을 정비해 부지 정리를 마무리하고, 2027년 착공 예정인 ‘도시숲 조성사업’ 본공사를 본격 추진한다는 계획이다.

도시숲 조성사업은 약 3km 구간의 폐철도를 산책로, 녹지, 휴식공간 등이 어우러진 친환경 도시공간으로 재생하는 프로젝트다. 사업이 완료되면 동천·용강·황성동을 잇는 도심 녹지축이 마련된다.

현장에서는 사업 설명과 함께 구간별 진행 상황을 확인했으며, 도착 지점에서는 참석자 단체사진 촬영이 이뤄져 사업 추진 의지를 다졌다.

주낙영 경주시장은 “이번 임시산책로 개방은 방치된 공간을 시민 품으로 돌려주는 첫 단계”라며 “2027년 본공사도 차질 없이 추진해 사계절 편히 즐길 수 있는 도심 녹색 명소로 만들겠다”고 밝혔다.

경주시는 앞으로도 주민 의견을 반영해 접근성과 편의시설을 보완하고, 지역 내 녹지 네트워크 구축에 속도를 낼 계획이다.

Opened in 1918, the Donghae Nambu Line ran through downtown Gyeongju for approximately 100 years until its closure in 2021. During the construction of the temporary walking trail, Gyeongju City collected approximately 198 tons of waste that had accumulated on the abandoned railway site for a long time. This amount was double the initial estimate, and the city explained, "By resolving accumulated environmental issues, we have laid the foundation for the creation of an urban forest."

The city plans to complete the site cleanup by clearing out remaining illegal farmland and undecommissioned facilities by next year and begin the main construction of the "Urban Forest Creation Project," scheduled to begin in 2027.

The Urban Forest Creation Project aims to transform approximately 3km of the abandoned railway into an eco-friendly urban space, featuring walking trails, green spaces, and rest areas. Upon completion, a green corridor connecting Dongcheon, Yonggang, and Hwangseong-dong will be established.

At the site, participants were briefed on the project and reviewed the progress of each section. A group photo was taken at the end point to reinforce the commitment to the project.

Gyeongju Mayor Joo Nak-young stated, "The opening of this temporary walking trail is the first step in returning this neglected space to the citizens. We will proceed with the main construction project in 2027 without a hitch, creating an urban green space that can be enjoyed comfortably all year round."

Gyeongju City plans to continue to reflect residents' feedback to improve accessibility and convenience, and accelerate the development of a network of green spaces within the region.
