이날 준공식에는 주낙영 경주시장을 비롯해 시·도의원, 지역 기관·단체장, 주민 등 200여 명이 참석해 지역 숙원사업의 마무리를 기념했다.

강동면은 포항시와 생활권이 맞닿아 외부 방문객이 많은 데다 행정복지센터와 공공기관, 상가 등이 밀집해 있어 주차 수요가 지속적으로 증가해 왔다. 기존 공용주차장은 지난 2018년 조성돼 23면 규모로 운영돼 왔으나 만성적인 주차난이 이어지며 주민 불편과 확장 요구가 꾸준히 제기됐다.

이에 경주시는 총 38억 원의 예산을 전액 시비로 투입해 확장 사업을 추진했다. 2022년 9월 실시설계 착수를 시작으로 지방재정투자심사, 토지 보상, 주민설명회 등의 절차를 완료한 뒤 올해 2월 공사에 들어가 하반기 준공했다.

확장된 공영주차장은 연면적 900.72㎡ 규모로, 1층 2단 구조로 조성됐다. 주차 면수는 기존 23면에서 66면으로 대폭 늘어났다. 완공된 시설은 강동면행정복지센터와 인근 상점가, 복지시설, 공공기관 이용 주민 및 방문객에게 무료로 개방된다.
