【브레이크뉴스 대구】이성현 기자=대구광역시는 외교부 주관 ‘2025년도 공공외교 우수사례 공모’에서 에스토니아 사아레마 오페라페스티벌 해외 진출 공연 성과로 ‘우수기관’에 선정됐다고 9일 밝혔다.

대구시에 따르면 외교부는 중앙행정기관, 지방자치단체, 재외공관을 대상으로 국내외 기관 협업을 통한 공공외교 성과와 글로벌 이슈 관련 공공외교 추진 사례를 공모·평가했으며, 총 10개의 우수사례를 선정했다.

대구시는 ‘오페라의 선율로 여는 글로벌 문화외교의 새로운 장’을 주제로, 7월 대구오페라하우스의 에스토니아 사아레마 오페라페스티벌 해외 진출 공연을 우수사례로 제출해 외교부 장관상을 수상했다.

‘사아레마 오페라페스티벌(7.22.~26.)’은 대구시의 이례적인 대규모 공연단 파견(142명)과 함께 에스토니아 문화부, 국립극장(에스티콘서트, Eesti Kontsert), 주에스토니아 대한민국 대사관 등 기관과 단체 간 유기적인 협업을 통해 축제 성과를 극대화했다.

대구시 공연단은 윤이상의 <심청> 등 5개의 작품을 제작·공연해, 수준 높은 작품성으로 전석 매진과 현지 언론의 극찬을 이끌어 내며 K-오페라의 글로벌 경쟁력을 입증했다.

축제 기간 동안 에스토니아 총리, 문화부 장관, 14개국 대사 및 외교관 등 고위관계자들이 대거 참석해, 에스토니아와의 외교적 유대 강화와 문화 교류 활성화를 이끌었다.

이후 ‘제22회 대구국제오페라축제(9.26.~11.8.)’ 기간 중 개최된 ‘영 아티스트 캐스팅 오디션(10.24.~25.)’과 ‘글로벌 오페라 포럼·마켓(10.27.)’에는 에스토니아의 케르투 오로(Kertu Orro) 에스티콘서트 CEO가 참석해 지속적인 오페라 협력사업을 논의했다. 11월에는 탈린 음악사절단이 대구 주요 공연장과 예술기관을 방문하며 에스토니아와의 문화 교류를 이어갔다.

또한, 대구시와 대구오페라하우스는 2026년 세계 최대 규모의 극장인 중국국가대극원(NCPA)과 초대형 오페라 <리골레토> 공동제작·배급을 추진하며, 국제교류 다변화 및 오페라를 매개로 한 문화 외교 활동을 확대해 나갈 예정이다.

이재성 대구광역시 문화체육관광국장은 “국내 유일의 오페라 제작극장 대구오페라하우스를 중심으로, K-오페라를 통한 다양한 국가들과의 문화 외교 활동을 강화해 대구를 넘어 대한민국의 문화적 위상을 높이는 데 최선을 다하겠다”고 말했다.

Daegu City Selected as an Outstanding Public Diplomacy Institution...Leading Global Cultural Diplomacy with K-Opera

Daegu Metropolitan City announced on the 9th that it was selected as an "Outstanding Institution" in the "2025 Public Diplomacy Best Practices Contest" hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for its performances at the Estonian Saaremaa Opera Festival overseas.

According to Daegu City, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs solicited and evaluated submissions from central administrative agencies, local governments, and diplomatic missions abroad on public diplomacy achievements through domestic and international collaboration and public diplomacy initiatives related to global issues. A total of 10 outstanding cases were selected.

Daegu City submitted the Daegu Opera House's overseas performance of the Estonian Saaremaa Opera Festival in July as an outstanding case under the theme "Opening a New Chapter in Global Cultural Diplomacy with the Melodies of Opera." The city received the Minister of Foreign Affairs Award.

The Saaremaa Opera Festival (July 22-26) maximized its success through the unprecedented dispatch of a large-scale performing troupe (142 performers) by the Daegu Metropolitan City and through close collaboration between institutions and organizations, including the Estonian Ministry of Culture, the National Theater of Korea (Eesti Kontsert), and the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Estonia.

The Daegu Metropolitan City Performing Arts Troupe produced and performed five works, including Yun Isang's "Simcheong," demonstrating the high quality of the productions, selling out tickets and garnering rave reviews from the local media, demonstrating the global competitiveness of Korean opera.

During the festival, a large number of high-ranking officials, including the Estonian Prime Minister, the Minister of Culture, and ambassadors and diplomats from 14 countries, attended, strengthening diplomatic ties with Estonia and promoting cultural exchange.

Following this, Kertu Orro, CEO of Esti Concerts from Estonia, attended the "Young Artist Casting Auditions" (October 24-25) and the "Global Opera Forum and Market" (October 27), held during the 22nd Daegu International Opera Festival (September 26-November 8), where he discussed ongoing opera collaborations. In November, a Tallinn Music Delegation visited major performance halls and art institutions in Daegu, continuing cultural exchanges with Estonia.

Furthermore, Daegu City and the Daegu Opera House plan to pursue a joint production and distribution of the mega-opera "Rigoletto" with the National Center for the Performing Arts (NCPA), the world's largest theater, in 2026. This will diversify international exchanges and expand cultural diplomacy through opera.

Lee Jae-seong, Director of the Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau of Daegu Metropolitan City, said, “We will do our best to enhance the cultural status of not only Daegu but also the Republic of Korea by strengthening cultural diplomacy activities with various countries through K-opera, centering on the Daegu Opera House, the only opera production theater in Korea.”
