이번 평가는 대구광역시 군위군·달성군과 경북 지역 22개 시·군을 대상으로 기상관측 장비 운영 실태와 관측자료의 정확성·신뢰성, 관측 표준 및 운영 절차 준수 여부 등을 종합적으로 심사해 우수기관을 선정하는 제도다.

경주시는 기상관측 장비에 대한 체계적인 유지관리와 정기적인 점검·검정을 실시하고, 관측자료 관리 기준을 표준화하는 한편 운영 절차 정비와 담당자 교육, 현장 관리 강화를 통해 관측 정확성과 안정성을 지속적으로 높여온 점에서 높은 평가를 받았다.

특히 신뢰도 높은 기상관측 자료를 바탕으로 태풍과 집중호우 등 자연재난에 대한 사전 예측과 대응 역량을 강화하고, 이를 재난안전 정책 수립과 현장 대응에 적극 활용하고 있는 점이 우수 사례로 꼽혔다.
