【브레이크뉴스 대구】진예솔 기자=대구시교육청이 2026학년도부터 초등학교 학급당 학생 수를 탄력적으로 줄여 더 나은 교육 환경을 조성한다고 12일 밝혔다.

이번 정책에 따라 초등학교 1학년의 학급당 학생 수 기준이 기존 2~6학년의 26명보다 3명 적은 23명으로 조정된다. 대구교육청은 학교생활을 처음 시작하는 신입생들이 보다 세심하게 돌봄을 받을 수 있도록 이같이 규정을 마련했다.

실제 2026학년도 초등학교 학급 편성 결과, 1학년의 학급당 평균 학생 수는 19.2명으로, 올해(2025학년도) 20.8명에 비해 1.6명 줄었다. 2~6학년도 학급당 평균 학생 수는 22.1명으로 집계됐다.

과밀학급 문제도 눈에 띄게 개선됐다. 2025학년도 193학급에 달했던 과밀학급 수는 내년에는 116학급으로 줄어, 40% 가까이 감소하는 성과를 거뒀다.

이 같은 변화는 학급당 학생 수 감축 정책이 현장에서 효과를 내고 있음을 보여주는 대목이다. 대구교육청은 특히 입학 초기 1학년 학생들이 안정적으로 학교에 적응할 수 있도록 교사와 학생 간 상호작용을 높이고, 생활지도와 기초 학습에도 더욱 힘쓸 수 있도록 조치했다는 설명이다.

또한 특수학급이 설치된 통합학교나 이주배경 학생 비율이 높은 학교는 학급당 학생 수를 20명 이하로 운영하거나, 학교 의견을 반영해 학급 편성에 유연성을 두기로 했다.

대구시교육청은 학령인구 감소와 교원 정원 변화 등 교육 환경 변화에 대응해 학급당 학생 수를 꾸준히 줄여왔다. 실제 학급편성 기준은 2024년 27.0명, 2025년 26.5명에서 2026학년도에는 1학년 23명, 2~6학년 26명으로 축소됐다.

이러한 방침에 따라 내년부터는 학생 각자의 특성을 고려한 맞춤형 교육 제공과 교사의 학생 지도 환경이 크게 개선될 것으로 기대된다. 특히 학교 현장의 요구와 학생수 변화를 지속적으로 반영하겠다는 게 교육청의 계획이다.

강은희 대구시교육감은 “학교에 첫발을 내딛는 1학년 신입생들과 교육 여건 변화로 어려움을 겪는 학생들이 안정적이고 따뜻한 환경에서 학교생활을 시작할 수 있도록 학급당 학생 수를 낮췄다”며 “앞으로도 학생 중심 교육환경 조성과 맞춤형 지원 확대에 더욱 힘쓰겠다”고 밝혔다.
