포항시환경정책위원회는 환경보전계획 수립과 주요 현안에 대한 심의·자문을 수행하는 기구로, 시 환경정책의 컨트롤타워 역할을 맡고 있다. 이날 회의에는 장상길 권한대행을 비롯해 시의원과 환경 전문가 등 위촉직 위원들이 참석해 정책 방향과 핵심 사업을 논의했다.

회의에서는 ▲포항환경학교 이전 ▲구무천 생태하천 복원사업 ▲‘2027 이클레이 세계총회’ 포항 개최 준비 등 3대 핵심 사업이 중점적으로 다뤄졌다.

포항환경학교 이전 사업과 관련해 기존 신광초 비학분교에서 중명생태공원으로의 이전 추진 상황이 공유됐다. 시는 지난해 ‘유아기후환경교육관 조성 공모사업’에 선정돼 국비를 확보했으며, 오는 9월 개관을 목표로 환경교육 인프라 구축에 속도를 내고 있다. 향후 위원회 자문을 반영해 교육 프로그램과 운영계획을 보완하고, 세부 일정은 시민들에게 안내할 계획이다.

총사업비 400억 원 규모의 구무천 생태하천 복원사업은 오는 4월 착공을 앞두고 있다. 위원들은 공사 과정에서 발생할 수 있는 환경오염 확산 방지 대책 등을 집중 논의했으며, 시는 이를 토대로 공정 관리에 행정력을 집중할 방침이다.

아울러 2027년 9월 개최 예정인 2027 이클레이 세계총회 준비 상황과 대외 대응 전략도 점검됐다. 시는 100여 개국 1,500여 명이 참여하는 국제행사를 통해 포항의 환경정책을 세계에 알리고, 기후위기 대응 선도도시로 도약한다는 구상이다.

장상길 권한대행은 “포항은 철강 중심 도시에서 사람과 자연이 공존하는 녹색환경도시로 전환하는 중요한 시점”이라며 “전문가와 시민사회의 의견을 정책에 반영해 실질적인 성과로 이어지도록 하겠다”고 밝혔다.
