“Commercialization of Water-Based Batteries Closer”… POSTECH Develops Surface Treatment Technology to Control Hydrogen Generation
Amid rising interest in “safe batteries” following a series of electric vehicle fires and smartphone overheating incidents, a team of Korean researchers has solved a key challenge that had been hindering the commercialization of water-based zinc batteries, which use water as an electrolyte.
A research team led by Professor Lee Min-ah and Dr. Kwon Min-hyung of the Department of Battery Engineering at the Graduate School of Eco-friendly Materials at Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) announced the development of a technology that suppresses hydrogen gas generated in water-based zinc batteries and induces stable charging and discharging of zinc through a simple surface treatment process involving briefly immersing a copper current collector in an eco-friendly solution.
The results of this research have been published in the online edition of the international academic journal Energy Storage Materials.
Unlike lithium-ion batteries that use flammable organic solvents, water-based zinc batteries have a low risk of fire. Furthermore, zinc, the anode material, possesses both price competitiveness and high capacity, making them a focus of attention as next-generation energy storage systems (ESS). In particular, they have significant potential for application in the field of renewable energy storage, such as solar and wind power. However, in aqueous electrolyte environments, there was a problem where water decomposed first during the zinc reduction process, generating hydrogen gas. This hydrogen hindered the uniform deposition of zinc on the electrode surface, leading to uneven metal growth and the formation of byproducts, thereby degrading battery performance and lifespan.
Instead of modifying the electrolyte as in conventional methods, the research team focused on the surface of the copper current collector, where hydrogen generation begins. By treating the surface of the copper current collector by immersing it in a "deep eutectic solvent," the existing oxide film was removed, and an organic protective layer several nanometers thick was formed.
This protective layer fundamentally suppressed hydrogen gas generation by blocking the adsorption of hydrogen ions. At the same time, it induced the uniform formation of a copper-zinc alloy layer during the initial charging process, creating an environment where zinc grew densely in a plate-like structure.
Experimental results showed that the zinc formed using this method exhibited a density of 106%, approaching an ideal level, and the grain size grew to over 2 μm, ensuring structural stability. In terms of performance indicators, the battery achieved the highest level compared to existing aqueous zinc batteries, recording a cumulative capacity of 5.8 Ah/cm² at a zinc utilization rate of 30% and 2.2 Ah/cm² at 50%.
In particular, the research team demonstrated the potential for practical application of the technology by confirming stable operation in commercial pouch cells, going beyond the laboratory level.
Professor Lee Min-ah stated, "We have fundamentally resolved the issue of efficiency degradation in aqueous batteries by imparting reactive selectivity to the surface of the current collector." She added, "In a situation where the demand for energy storage devices is surging due to the expansion of renewable energy, this will become a key technology to accelerate the commercialization of aqueous zinc batteries that possess both safety and economic viability."
Meanwhile, this research was conducted with support from the National Research Foundation of Korea's STEAM Future Promising Convergence Technology Pioneer Project and the Industrial Innovation Talent Growth Support Project of the Korea Institute for Industrial Technology Promotion (KITECH), under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.
