DGIST Develops Solid Electrolyte for Low-Temperature and High-Safety Lithium Metal Batteries
Researchers at DGIST have developed a next-generation solid electrolyte technology for lithium metal batteries that operates stably even in low-temperature environments and reduces the risk of fire.
DGIST announced that a research team led by Principal Researcher Jaehyun Kim of the Energy and Environment Research Division developed high-performance solid electrolyte technology through a joint study with Professor Sangwook Lee's team at Sungkyunkwan University and Professor Sang-eun Jeon of Kyungpook National University.
Lithium metal batteries are attracting attention as next-generation batteries due to their high energy density; however, using conventional liquid electrolytes has limitations, such as the risk of fire and reduced battery lifespan caused by interfacial instability and the formation of lithium dendrites due to side reactions.
While solid electrolytes have been proposed as an alternative to address these issues, existing polymer-based solid electrolytes suffered from problems such as a rapid decline in performance in low-temperature environments and low stability under high-voltage conditions.
To improve this, the research team developed a new solid electrolyte by combining a fluorinated ether (FE) with a PEGDME-based polymer network. The research team stabilized the structure and significantly improved performance by utilizing molecular interactions between polymers and additives.
The developed electrolyte maintained high ionic conductivity (over 1.46 × 10⁻⁴ S/cm) without freezing even at temperatures below -20°C and demonstrated improved battery performance by enhancing lithium ion mobility.
Furthermore, it was found to suppress lithium dendrite growth by forming a stable protective layer on the electrode surface and ensure excellent lifespan characteristics even in high-voltage cathode environments. Notably, it also reduced the risk of fire through flame-retardant properties.
This technology utilizes an "in-situ process" to form polymers within the cell, making it compatible with existing liquid battery manufacturing processes. By demonstrating performance levels suitable for actual battery applications, the technology has also confirmed its potential for commercialization.
Kim Jae-hyun, a principal researcher at DGIST, stated, "This research presents a polymer solid electrolyte technology that ensures safety while operating stably even in low-temperature environments," adding, "We expect it to serve as an important foundation for the development of next-generation high-energy-density batteries."
Meanwhile, Injun Jeon, a full-time researcher at the Energy and Environment Research Division of DGIST, participated in this study as a co-first author, and Jongmin Kim, a senior researcher, participated as a co-author. The research was conducted with support from the National Research Foundation of Korea's Mid-Career Researcher Program, and the results were published in the April issue of the international academic journal Energy Storage Materials.
