Pohang City, POSCO, and Daegu Regional Environmental Office Join Hands to Expand Reusable Containers in Funeral Homes… Promoting the Establishment of an Eco-friendly Funeral Culture
On the 11th, Pohang City signed a "Voluntary Agreement for Expanding the Use of Reusable Containers in Funeral Homes" with the Daegu Regional Environmental Office, POSCO, and the Labor-Management Council at the conference room of POSCO's headquarters.
This agreement was established to reduce the use of single-use items within funeral homes and to establish a culture of using reusable containers. It holds added significance as a regional win-win model for de-plasticization involving public institutions, corporations, and employee representatives.
With the recent rise in international raw material prices and ongoing instability in resource supply, the need to reduce plastic use and practice resource circulation is growing. Furthermore, the necessity of transitioning to reusable containers has been consistently raised for funeral homes, as their usage of single-use items is high due to the nature of using a large volume of tableware within a short period.
Taking this agreement as an opportunity, Pohang City plans to fully implement a support project for reusable containers in funeral homes. To this end, the city plans to select and operate specialized subsidy providers equipped with a system for the rental, collection, cleaning, and resupply of reusable containers, and to gradually promote the expanded use of reusable containers at local funeral homes.
In addition, the city intends to focus on establishing an eco-friendly funeral culture and strengthening the foundation for local resource circulation, centering on major funeral homes such as Pohang Chrysanthemum Garden, Pohang Medical Center, Pohang St. Mary's Hospital, Pohang Semyeong Christian Hospital, and Pohang Citizens Funeral Home.
POSCO and the Labor-Management Council have agreed to encourage voluntary participation by providing employees using funeral homes that utilize reusable containers with alternative funeral service items equivalent to the amount previously subsidized for single-use items.
The city expects this agreement to lead to improved public awareness and the spread of a sustainable, eco-friendly lifestyle.
Acting Mayor Jang Sang-gil stated, "It is time for an eco-friendly transition in the funeral culture sector as well," adding, "Taking this agreement as an opportunity, we will expand resource circulation policies that citizens can experience firsthand and do our utmost to create a sustainable, eco-friendly city."
