박용선 후보는 지난 8일 포항 죽도시장과 구룡포시장을 잇따라 방문해 상인 및 시민들과 만나 현장 의견을 청취하는 ‘민심 경청 투어’를 시작했다. 죽도시장에서는 상인회 임원들과 간담회를 갖고 전통시장 활성화 방안을 논의했으며, 구룡포시장에서는 수산물 유통 현장의 애로사항과 민생 현안을 둘러봤다.

박 후보는 이번 행보에 대해 “형식적인 인사가 아닌 상인들의 고충을 직접 듣고 정책에 반영하기 위한 자리”라고 설명했다. 그는 시장 곳곳을 돌며 최근 고물가와 소비 위축으로 어려움을 겪고 있는 상인들을 위로하고, 관광과 연계한 시장 육성 방안을 제시했다.

박 후보는 “전통시장이 단순한 판매 공간을 넘어 관광객이 머물고 즐길 수 있는 복합 문화공간으로 거듭날 수 있도록 지원하겠다”며 “현장에 답이 있다는 믿음으로 시민들의 목소리를 시정에 적극 반영하겠다”고 밝혔다. 또 향후 포항 전역의 전통시장을 순차적으로 방문해 현장에서 접수한 민원을 ‘민생 밀착형 공약’으로 발표하겠다는 계획도 내놨다.

더불어민주당 박희정 후보는 11일 포항 중입자치료센터 설립 추진 구상을 발표하며 의료 인프라 확충 공약을 제시했다.

박 후보는 “포항 시민들이 암 치료를 위해 서울 등 대도시로 이동해야 하는 현실을 바꾸겠다”며 “첨단 암 치료 인프라 부족으로 환자와 가족들이 시간·비용·체력 부담을 떠안고 있다”고 지적했다.

그는 중입자치료센터를 포항가속기연구소와 포스텍 융합대학원 의과학 전공 등과 연계하고, AI 기반 치료 데이터베이스 구축과 원거리 환자 불편 해소 체계도 함께 추진하겠다고 밝혔다.

이어 “중입자치료센터는 단순히 포항만을 위한 시설이 아니라 전국 단위 환자 유입이 가능한 의료 거점이 될 수 있다”며 “포항의 의료 경쟁력과 산업 경쟁력을 동시에 끌어올리는 전환점이 될 것”이라고 강조했다.

또 “울산 등 인근 지역에서도 첨단 입자치료 인프라 논의가 이어지고 있다”며 “포항이 중입자치료센터를 확보해 동남권 의료 공백을 메우는 중심 도시가 되어야 한다”고 주장했다.

박 후보는 대경선 광역전철과 연계한 의료 접근성 확대 구상도 제시했다. 그는 “포항까지 광역전철이 연결되면 환자와 보호자들이 전철을 이용해 포항으로 치료를 받으러 오는 의료·교통 연계 모델이 가능해질 것”이라며 “지역 체류와 소비를 유도하는 의료 기반 도시활력 모델을 만들겠다”고 말했다.

아울러 “포스텍이 추진 중인 의과학대학과 연계할 경우 포항은 바이오·의과학 혁신도시로 도약할 수 있다”며 “중입자치료센터가 경북·동해안권 암 치료 접근성 개선과 바이오·의료기기 산업 생태계 구축, 연구·인재 양성 강화로 이어질 것”이라고 전망했다.

“Believing that the answers are found in the field, I will continue visiting every corner of Pohang,” Park said. “I will use every valuable comment from citizens as the foundation of policies to create a vibrant Pohang where people’s livelihoods come first.”

Meanwhile, Democratic Party candidate Park Hee-jung announced on May 11 a proposal to establish a heavy ion therapy center in Pohang as part of a broader effort to expand advanced medical infrastructure.

Park Hee-jung said, “The issue in Pohang is not a lack of determination among citizens, but the lack of advanced cancer treatment infrastructure in the region.” She added that patients and their families are forced to endure significant burdens in terms of time, cost, and physical exhaustion due to repeated long-distance travel for treatment.

She proposed linking the heavy ion treatment center with the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory and POSTECH’s biomedical science programs while also building an AI-based treatment database and systems to reduce inconvenience for long-distance patients.

“The heavy ion treatment center would not only serve Pohang citizens,” she said. “If successfully established, it could attract patients nationwide and become a turning point that strengthens both Pohang’s medical competitiveness and industrial competitiveness.”

She also noted that nearby regions such as Ulsan are discussing advanced particle therapy infrastructure and argued that Pohang should move a step further by securing a heavy ion therapy center to fill the medical service gap in the southeastern region of Korea.

Park further linked the proposal to the future extension of the Daegyeong regional railway network to Pohang, saying patients and caregivers could travel conveniently by train for treatment, thereby boosting local stays and consumer spending through a “medical-based urban vitality model.”

In addition, she said that if linked with POSTECH’s planned medical science college, Pohang could emerge as a leading bio-medical innovation city. She projected that the heavy ion therapy center would improve cancer treatment accessibility for residents in North Gyeongsang and the East Coast region while also helping establish a bio and medical device industry ecosystem and strengthening research and talent development.
