Pohang Lawmakers Secure KRW 3.8 Billion in Special Grants for Local Projects and Safety Improvements
Kim Jung-jae Secures KRW 1.2 Billion and Lee Sang-hwi KRW 2.6 Billion for Senior Center Construction, Park Development, River Maintenance, and Disaster Prevention Projects
People Power Party lawmakers representing Pohang announced on May 11 that they had secured a combined KRW 3.8 billion in special grants from the Ministry of the Interior and Safety to support local infrastructure, safety, and disaster prevention projects.
Kim Jung-jae said she secured KRW 1.2 billion in special grants for four projects, including three local development projects worth KRW 1 billion and one disaster and safety-related project worth KRW 200 million.
The local projects include KRW 300 million for the construction of a new senior citizens’ center in Gokgang 2-ri, Heunghae-eup; KRW 500 million for the Duho Park development project; and KRW 200 million for drainage channel maintenance work in Hyeonnae 1-ri, Gigye-myeon.
The new senior center project is intended to support elderly residents of Gokgang 2-ri who relocated due to the development of the Yeongilman Industrial Complex. Construction is scheduled to begin in June, and the facility is expected to provide a comfortable leisure and community space for senior residents.
Funding for the Duho Park project will help address construction cost shortages that had delayed progress. The park is expected to serve as a recreational area for residents of Duho-dong and Jangseong-dong, as well as visitors to the Pohang International Exhibition and Convention Center, which is scheduled for completion in 2027.
The drainage maintenance project in Hyeonnae-ri will improve a frequently flooded agricultural drainage channel near the Gigye Sewage Treatment Plant, helping reduce crop damage and improve local safety.
In addition, Kim secured KRW 200 million for the installation of access control facilities along the Haksan Stream ecological river area. The project includes pedestrian safety barriers and water-level control systems designed to automatically restrict access during heavy rainfall, helping prevent accidents.
Meanwhile, Lee Sang-hwi announced that he had secured KRW 2.6 billion in special grants for projects in Pohang’s Nam-gu district and Ulleung County.
Of the total, KRW 1.1 billion was allocated to Pohang Nam-gu projects, including KRW 500 million for streetlight installation between Wonyong Intersection and Mundeok-ro 23beon-gil, KRW 400 million for road repairs in the Sangdae-dong Youth Street area, and KRW 200 million for riverbed maintenance and dredging work along the Janggi Stream.
Ulleung County received KRW 1.5 billion, including KRW 1 billion for wave overtopping prevention facilities along the coastal ring road and KRW 500 million for riverbed maintenance work on Namseo Stream.
The projects are aimed at improving pedestrian safety, enhancing nighttime walking environments, preparing for heavy rainfall, and strengthening safety measures along coastal roads and rivers. Officials expect the projects to help reduce residents’ inconvenience and improve disaster response capabilities.
Kim Jung-jae said the funding would help resolve long-standing community needs and expand local infrastructure, adding that she would continue working to secure necessary budgets for Pohang Buk-gu residents.
Lee Sang-hwi said the special grants represented meaningful achievements for improving residents’ safety and convenience, pledging continued efforts to identify local issues and secure timely government support.
