【브레이크뉴스 대구】이성현 기자=DGIST 창업기업인 인공지능(AI) 전문기업 ㈜유니바가 과학기술정보통신부의 대형 국책사업인 ‘AIx바이오 혁신연구거점 조성 시범사업’ 세부 주관기관으로 최종 선정됐다.

이번 사업은 AI 기반 신약 개발 역량을 강화해 디지털 바이오 전환을 선도하기 위한 국가 전략 프로젝트다. 과학기술정보통신부와 한국연구재단의 국비 지원, 대구광역시 및 경북대학교의 매칭 펀드를 포함해 총 491억 원이 투입된다.

사업은 경북대를 총괄 주관기관으로, 대구시와 유니바, 경북대학교병원, 대구경북첨단의료산업진흥재단이 컨소시엄을 구성해 추진한다.

이번 선정으로 유니바는 2026년 4월부터 2030년 12월까지 5년간 총 46억 원 규모의 세부 연구과제를 맡아 수행하게 된다. 회사는 최신 고성능 연산 인프라인 엔비디아 B300 GPU 48장을 활용해 신약 개발용 데이터 구축과 바이오 분야 특화 ‘AI 파운데이션 모델’ 개발을 전담할 예정이다.

AI 파운데이션 모델은 대규모 데이터를 사전 학습해 다양한 연구 목적에 활용할 수 있는 범용 인공지능 기술로, 차세대 AI 신약개발의 핵심 인프라로 평가된다.

유니바는 2021년 DGIST 학부생들이 주축이 돼 설립한 AI 딥테크 기업이다. 특정 산업 분야에 최적화된 데이터 구축 기술과 자체 파운데이션 모델 원천기술을 확보하고 있으며, 지금까지 기술·과학 문서 52만 건, 수학 및 교과 데이터 60만 건 등 대규모 고난도 데이터를 구축해 공개하며 기술력을 입증해 왔다.

특히 2023년 한국어 특화 AI 모델 ‘코모도(KOMODO)’로 오픈소스 언어모델 리더보드(Open Ko-LLM) 1위에 올랐으며, 최근에는 KAIST와 공동으로 추론형 모델 ‘딥시크 블로섬(DeepSeek-Blossom)’ 시리즈를 공개하는 등 AI 분야에서 두각을 나타내고 있다.

이와 함께 중소벤처기업부 인공지능 챔피언십 1위(장관상)와 정보통신산업진흥원 DNA 혁신상(원장상)을 잇달아 수상하며 유망 AI 강소기업으로 빠르게 성장하고 있다.

유니바는 앞으로 AI 파운데이션 모델을 활용해 신약 후보물질을 정밀 예측하고, 이를 자동화 실험실에서 즉시 합성한 뒤 경북대의 활성 평가 데이터와 실시간으로 연계하는 ‘폐쇄 루프(Closed-loop)’ 시스템을 구축할 계획이다.

이를 통해 대구시 데이터 규제자유특구 내에서 민감한 의료 데이터를 안전하게 활용하고, 예측부터 검증까지 끊김 없이 이어지는 전주기 AI 신약개발 생태계를 구현해 글로벌 시장 공략에 나선다는 구상이다.

남명진 대표는 “이번 사업은 유니바의 고난도 데이터 구축 경험과 AI 모델 개발 역량을 입증할 수 있는 중요한 계기”라며 “국내 최고 수준의 임상 데이터와 첨단 인프라를 결합해 대한민국이 글로벌 AI 신약개발 시장의 주도권을 확보하는 데 핵심 역할을 하겠다”고 밝혔다.

DGIST Startup Uniba Selected for ‘AI x Bio Innovation Research Hub’… to Conduct 4.6 Billion Won National Project

Univa, an AI specialist startup from DGIST, has been finally selected as the lead organization for the ‘Pilot Project for Establishing an AI x Bio Innovation Research Hub,’ a large-scale national project by the Ministry of Science and ICT.

This project is a national strategic initiative aimed at leading the digital bio transformation by strengthening AI-based drug development capabilities. A total of 49.1 billion won will be invested, including state funding from the Ministry of Science and ICT and the National Research Foundation of Korea, as well as matching funds from Daegu Metropolitan City and Kyungpook National University.

The project will be implemented by a consortium consisting of Kyungpook National University as the overall lead organization, Daegu City, Uniba, Kyungpook National University Hospital, and the Daegu Gyeongbuk Advanced Medical Industry Promotion Foundation.

With this selection, Uniba will undertake detailed research projects worth a total of 4.6 billion won over five years, from April 2026 to December 2030. The company plans to utilize 48 NVIDIA B300 GPUs, the latest high-performance computing infrastructure, to focus on building data for new drug development and developing ‘AI Foundation Models’ specialized for the bio field.

AI Foundation Models are general-purpose artificial intelligence technologies that utilize large-scale data for various research purposes, and are considered a core infrastructure for next-generation AI drug development.

Univa is an AI deep tech company founded in 2021 by undergraduate students from DGIST. It possesses data building technologies optimized for specific industrial sectors as well as proprietary foundation model source technology. To date, the company has demonstrated its technological prowess by building and releasing large-scale, high-difficulty datasets, including 520,000 technical and scientific documents and 600,000 pieces of mathematics and curriculum data. In particular, the company is distinguishing itself in the AI ​​field, having ranked first on the Open Ko-LLM leaderboard in 2023 with its Korean-specific AI model, ‘KOMODO,’ and recently unveiling the ‘DeepSeek-Blossom’ series of inference models in collaboration with KAIST.

Along with this, the company is rapidly growing into a promising AI powerhouse, having consecutively won first place (Minister’s Award) at the Ministry of SMEs and Startups’ AI Championship and the DNA Innovation Award (President’s Award) from the Korea Information & Communication Technology Industry Promotion Agency (KIPA).

Univa plans to establish a ‘closed-loop’ system that utilizes its AI Foundation model to precisely predict new drug candidates, synthesizes them immediately in automated laboratories, and links them in real-time with activity evaluation data from Kyungpook National University.

Through this, the company envisions safely utilizing sensitive medical data within Daegu’s Data Regulation-Free Zone and implementing a full-cycle AI drug development ecosystem that seamlessly connects prediction to verification, with the goal of targeting the global market. CEO Nam Myung-jin stated, “This project is an important opportunity to demonstrate Uniba’s experience in building complex data and its capabilities in developing AI models,” adding, “By combining Korea’s top-tier clinical data with cutting-edge infrastructure, we will play a key role in helping South Korea secure leadership in the global AI drug discovery market.”
