번역에 오류가 있을 수 있음을 밝힙니다.> On the 28th, just six days before the June 3 local elections, the political scene in Daegu clashed fiercely over the leadership of the construction of the new Daegu-Gyeongbuk (TK) airport. That morning, campaign rallies were held at the Gunwi Market in Daegu by Democratic Party candidate Kim Boo-kyum and People Power Party floor leader Choo Kyung-ho. During the rallies, held approximately an hour apart, the two candidates clashed over the method of proceeding with the new airport. With the new airport issue expected to become the hottest topic in the remaining five days until the election, Candidate Kim Boo-kyum advocates for "promoting it as a state-supported project," while Candidate Choo Kyung-ho proposes "converting it to a state-led project," presenting completely different approaches.
Consequently, the messages of determination regarding the new airport project conveyed by the two candidates at the rallies are quite different. On this day as well, Candidate Kim Boo-kyum emphasized, "I will definitely put the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Integrated New Airport project, which is currently adrift, back on track," adding, "Since the new airport is a core project on which Daegu's future depends, we must proceed with a speed race without any further delays."
In particular, regarding the issue of funding, he directly refuted the claim made by his competitor, People Power Party candidate Choo Kyung-ho's camp, to "convert the project to a state-funded initiative." Candidate Kim pointed out, "It makes no sense for the People Power Party to design the project in the past using a donation-for-transfer method and then suddenly shift their stance to the argument of state responsibility." He sharply criticized them, stating, "Reflection on and an apology for their flawed approach must come first."
Candidate Kim then presented feasible budget measures as a concrete solution. He declared, "We have already finalized negotiations to secure 1 trillion won in government funding," adding, "I will significantly expand state support through the amendment of the Special Act and secure full support from the party to complete a solid roadmap for early groundbreaking."
Furthermore, he highlighted both the advantage of being the ruling party member and his strong drive, stating, "If the Mayor of Daegu’s will is combined with the President’s interest, pushing forward with the project becomes much easier," and declaring, "I will become the Mayor of Daegu and work together with the Lee Jae-myung administration to cleanly resolve the airport issue."
On this day, Candidate Kim’s campaign rally in Gunwi was accompanied by a large contingent of key party leaders and National Assembly officials, including Democratic Party Floor Leader Han Byung-do, Policy Committee Chair Han Jung-ae, and National Assembly Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee Secretary Bok Ki-wang. They lent their support by officially pledging full-scale budgetary and legislative backing from the central party to ensure the early commencement of construction on the new airport.
In response, Candidate Choo Kyung-ho secured a venue inside the market to begin his rally. Candidate Choo also naturally brought up the topic of the new airport. He made a bold move, stating, “I will pass the TK New Airport bill as a special act immediately after the election and proceed with the project using ‘state finances.’”
Candidate Choo pointed out, “Daegu City’s budget is 11.7 trillion won, but building the new airport requires a massive total of 23 trillion won in funding.” He emphasized, “This is precisely why I have persistently argued that the state must take responsibility for the construction of military airports.” This highlights the clear limitations of raising such large-scale funds under the existing “donation-for-transfer” method.
In particular, Candidate Chu strongly pressured the opposition party to join the effort, addressing the Democratic Party leadership visiting Gunwi that day by stating, “Since the Democratic Party is coming here today, we must secure a firm promise to proceed with the new airport as a state-funded project.”
He then foreshadowed large-scale legislative measures as a concrete roadmap. Candidate Chu declared, “As soon as the election is over, I will pass the bill immediately together with our party’s lawmakers, including Floor Leader Song Eon-seok,” adding, “Through the passage of the special act without delay, we will convert the construction of the new airport into a fully ‘state-funded project’ and begin construction immediately.”
Candidate Chu appealed for overwhelming support from the residents of Gunwi, stating, “The construction of the new airport is the most important project that will change the future of Gunwi. Only when state funds are invested and airport construction begins in earnest can Gunwi truly experience a great transformation that will turn the world upside down.”
On this day, the two candidates visited Gunwi side by side, as if by prior agreement. At 9 a.m., prior to his market rally, Candidate Chu visited the Gunwi Sobo New Airport site and listened to the residents' difficult situations and grievances from Gunwi County Governor candidate Kim Jin-yeol. Candidate Kim Boo-kyum visited the site after holding his market rally first. Candidate Kim also listened to the residents' opinions and presented a blueprint for the new airport project.
At a media day event with journalists, Candidate Chu Kyung-ho remarked, "We ended up aligning our various campaign schedules and site visits. I had planned to visit Gunwi to greet the residents, but our schedules overlapped. I suggested staggering our times for mutual convenience, and we each managed to carry out our schedules sufficiently and effectively to avoid any awkward situations."
