DGIST Selected for Semiconductor Fab Advancement Project… Full-scale Utilization of Experienced Professionals Begins
DGIST’s Next-Generation Sensor & Semiconductor Research Institute has been selected for a national R&D project aimed at advancing public semiconductor fabs and strengthening the technical support system.
DGIST announced that it has been selected as the lead R&D institution for a new project under the ‘2026 Nano & Materials Technology Development Project - Infrastructure Establishment (Fab Advancement),’ promoted by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the National Research Foundation of Korea.
This project was established to integrate the know-how of highly experienced professionals with over 10 years of experience in the semiconductor industry into the operation of public fabs and technology development.
Through this project, DGIST plans to pursue the development of semiconductor process technologies, the streamlining of fab operations, the stabilization of equipment and facilities, support for Multi-Project Wafer (MPW) production, support for device, design, analysis, and characterization evaluation, and on-site technical consulting.
In particular, the plan is to focus on establishing a full-cycle technology support system that enables researchers and companies to stably carry out tasks ranging from design to fabrication and demonstration, going beyond the unit-process-centered support of existing public fabs.
The project scale totals 7.2 billion KRW over six years, of which DGIST has secured 4.2 billion KRW in research funding. Seoul National University is participating as a joint R&D institution.
Director Kim Dae-hwan stated, "This is highly significant in that it directly connects the experience of highly experienced professionals accumulated in the industrial field to the operation of public fabs and technology development." He added, "Based on our existing capabilities in 6-inch Si CMOS-based MPW and research foundry services, we will strengthen cooperation with Seoul National University to contribute to the revitalization of the national semiconductor research ecosystem."
The DGIST Institute of Next-Generation Sensors and Semiconductors is a regional hub institution for national nano-infrastructure, possessing a 6-inch wafer-based Si semiconductor front-end process infrastructure and capabilities to link design, process, and analysis. The institute has been conducting research support programs for researchers in industry, academia, and research institutions through services such as MPW fabrication support and public fab shared utilization. Team Leader Lee Sang-han, the research director of this project, stated, “We will further strengthen support for semiconductor research and development, stabilize fab operations, and foster professional talent by combining the field experience of highly experienced professionals with DGIST’s public fab infrastructure.”
