POSCO Group Launches ‘2026 Global Volunteer Week’… Conducting Large-Scale Social Contributions in 23 Countries
POSCO Group has launched ‘2026 Global Volunteer Week,’ its largest annual social contribution program, together with employees working at its domestic and international business sites.
POSCO Group announced that it will conduct volunteer activities in 23 countries around the world for nine days starting from the 4th of this month. Marking its 17th year, Global Volunteer Week is the group’s flagship social contribution event, with approximately 24,000 employees participating to carry out various sharing activities tailored to the specific characteristics of each region.
On the first day of the event, POSCO Group Chairman Jang In-hwa visited Jungsan 1-ri in Pohang, North Gyeongsang Province, and participated in local environmental improvement activities with about 200 employees. Participants contributed to creating a safer environment for residents by installing safety handrails on the stairs of a village pavilion and clearing fallen leaves and twigs accumulated around the stream.
Jungsan 1-ri is located near Mt. Naeyeon and Mt. Cheonnyeong, making it a region at high risk of wildfires spreading into large-scale blazes. The high proportion of the elderly population, which makes rapid response difficult in the event of a disaster, has also been identified as a vulnerability.
During the volunteer activities on this day, aging walls were replaced with steel fences utilizing POSCO Group steel, and safety kits consisting of spray-type fire extinguishers, LED sensor lights, and automatic fire extinguishing power strips were distributed to elderly residents. Additionally, maintenance work was carried out using wildfire suppression equipment incorporating POSCO steel to prepare for torrential rains and wildfires.
Furthermore, efforts were made to strengthen the disaster response system, including holding a demonstration event with local firefighters ahead of the introduction of an AI wildfire detection system based on advanced CCTV and drone technology.
Support activities for residents' health management were also conducted in parallel. POSCO Group collaborated with the AI healthcare company ARK to conduct preliminary health checkups for elderly residents who have difficulty accessing medical facilities. Health management services were provided by utilizing an AI platform to monitor blood pressure, blood sugar, cardiovascular health, and cognitive function.
This activity was linked to the ‘POSCO 1% Sharing Foundation,’ which is funded by donating 1% of employees’ salaries. In particular, it was explained that the project’s effectiveness was enhanced by being carried out in conjunction with ‘Change My Town,’ a participatory social contribution program that identifies and renovates aging facilities within the region.
During the volunteer period, POSCO Group plans to continue various social contribution activities by affiliate, including improving the living environments of vulnerable groups, maintaining access roads, and providing rehabilitation exercise equipment. Region-specific volunteering will also be conducted at overseas business sites. Subsidiaries in Vietnam and Myanmar plan to improve educational environments by repairing children's play facilities and supporting IT infrastructure for schools for the visually impaired.
An official from POSCO Holdings’ Social Contribution Office stated, “Global Volunteer Week is a representative sharing program in which employees from around the world participate together,” adding, “We will continue to identify areas needed by local communities and expand social contribution activities that provide practical assistance.”
Meanwhile, POSCO Group has been carrying out various social contribution activities both domestically and internationally since the establishment of the POSCO Volunteer Corps in 2003. In addition, through the POSCO 1% Sharing Foundation, which operates on a system of employee donations and the company's matching grants, we are striving to promote mutual growth with local communities and spread a culture of sharing.
