포항해양경찰서는 바다에 기름이나 폐기물 등 오염물질을 무단 배출하는 행위를 신고할 경우 최대 300만 원의 포상금을 지급한다고 밝혔다.

신고 대상은 선박이나 해양시설에서 기름 또는 유해물질을 배출하는 행위를 비롯해 해상에 폐기물과 오염물질을 투기하는 경우, 폐수 등을 바다로 불법 배출하는 행위 등이다.

해양오염 현장을 발견한 시민은 119를 통해 신고하거나 가까운 해양경찰서와 파출소를 방문해 접수할 수 있다.

신고가 접수되면 해양경찰이 현장 조사와 사실관계 확인 절차를 진행하며, 위반 행위가 확인돼 단속이나 행정처분으로 이어질 경우 포상금이 지급된다.

포상금 규모는 오염물질의 종류와 배출 규모, 환경 피해 정도 등을 종합적으로 고려해 결정되며 최소 5만 원에서 최대 300만 원까지 받을 수 있다.

해경은 신고자의 개인정보를 철저히 보호하고 있으며, 포상금 신청 절차와 지급 방법도 개별 안내하고 있다고 설명했다.

포항해양경찰서에 따르면 최근 3년간 포항·경주 지역에서는 해양오염 신고 2건이 포상금 지급 대상으로 인정돼 총 13만 원의 포상금이 지급됐다.

이근안 포항해양경찰서장은 “해양오염 사고는 초기 대응 여부에 따라 피해 규모가 크게 달라질 수 있다”며 “바다에서 오염행위를 발견하면 즉시 신고해 달라”고 당부했다.
