【브레이크뉴스 포항】박영재 기자=포스코 포항제철소가 본격적인 무더위를 앞두고 지역 취약계층을 위한 여름철 나눔 활동에 나섰다.

포스코 포항제철소는 지난 9일 임직원들이 직접 참여하는 ‘둘이서 한마음 우리끼리 봉사활동’을 통해 제철소 인근 홀몸 어르신 가정을 찾아 선풍기와 생필품을 전달했다고 밝혔다.

이번 활동은 임직원들의 자발적인 급여 기부로 운영되는 포스코1%나눔재단의 기금을 활용해 마련됐다. 특히 기금 조성에 참여한 직원들이 직접 현장을 찾아 봉사활동에 나서는 참여형 사회공헌 프로그램으로 진행돼 의미를 더했다.

이날 봉사에는 40여 명의 임직원이 참여했다. 직원들은 동료들과 2인 1조를 이뤄 죽도동과 청림동 등 제철소 인근 5개 지역의 홀몸 어르신 가정을 방문했다.

봉사단은 각 가정에 선풍기를 전달하고 현장에서 직접 조립과 작동 점검을 실시했다. 또한 어르신들이 안전하게 사용할 수 있도록 사용 방법과 주의사항을 안내했다.

이와 함께 생수와 생활용품으로 구성된 지원 물품도 전달하고, 홀로 생활하는 어르신들의 안부를 살피며 말벗이 되어주는 시간도 가졌다.

포항제철소는 이번 활동을 시작으로 올해 지역 내 홀몸 어르신 170가구를 대상으로 선풍기와 생필품을 순차적으로 지원할 계획이다.

봉사활동에 참여한 한 직원은 “직접 기부에 참여한 후 그 마음이 이웃들에게 전달되는 과정을 현장에서 확인할 수 있어 더욱 뜻깊었다”며 “동료들과 함께 지역사회에 작은 도움을 전할 수 있어 보람을 느꼈다”고 말했다.

유호범 포항연탄은행 대표는 “갑작스러운 더위로 어르신들의 건강이 걱정됐는데 포스코 임직원들이 선풍기 지원에 나서 큰 도움이 됐다”며 “앞으로도 지역사회 나눔 활동을 함께 이어가길 기대한다”고 밝혔다.

한편 POSCO 그룹은 지난 4일부터 전 세계 임직원이 참여하는 사회공헌 집중 기간인 ‘글로벌 볼런티어 위크’를 운영하고 있다. 포항제철소는 앞으로도 지역 주민들을 위한 다양한 맞춤형 봉사활동과 나눔 프로그램을 지속적으로 추진할 방침이다.

Ahead of the intense summer heat, POSCO Pohang Steelworks has launched a summer sharing initiative for vulnerable local communities.

POSCO Pohang Steelworks announced that on the 9th, through the "Two in One Heart, One Among Us Volunteer Activity" in which employees directly participated, they visited the homes of elderly people living alone near the steelworks to deliver fans and daily necessities.

This activity was organized using funds from the POSCO 1% Sharing Foundation, which is funded by voluntary salary donations from employees. The initiative held particular significance as it was conducted as a participatory social contribution program where employees who contributed to the fund personally visited the sites to participate in volunteer activities.

Approximately 40 employees participated in the volunteer work on this day. Employees formed two-person teams with colleagues to visit the homes of elderly people living alone in five areas near the steelworks, including Jukdo-dong and Cheongnim-dong.

The volunteer group delivered the fans to each household and performed on-site assembly and operational checks. In addition, instructions on usage methods and precautions were provided to ensure the elderly could use the items safely.

Along with this, support items consisting of bottled water and daily necessities were delivered, and time was also spent checking on the well-being of elderly people living alone and providing companionship.

Starting with this activity, Pohang Steelworks plans to sequentially provide electric fans and daily necessities to 170 households of elderly people living alone in the region this year.

One employee who participated in the volunteer activity said, “It was even more meaningful to witness firsthand the process of our heartfelt donation being delivered to our neighbors after participating directly,” adding, “I felt a sense of reward being able to offer a small help to the local community together with my colleagues.”

Yoo Ho-beom, Representative of Pohang Coal Bank, stated, “I was worried about the health of the elderly due to the sudden heat wave, but the support provided by POSCO employees was a great help,” and added, “I look forward to continuing community sharing activities together in the future.”

Meanwhile, POSCO Group has been operating ‘Global Volunteer Week,’ an intensive social contribution period involving employees from around the world, since the 4th. Pohang Steelworks plans to continue promoting various customized volunteer activities and sharing programs for local residents in the future.
