DGIST Hosts Daegu-Gyeongbuk UAM Future Aviation Forum… “Presenting a Blueprint for Sky Transportation Connecting New Airport and City Center”
DGIST held a specialized forum to explore ways to establish a future transportation system for Daegu and Gyeongbuk utilizing Urban Air Mobility (UAM) and engaged in discussions on strategies to foster a region-specific future aviation industry.
DGIST announced that it held the "Daegu-Gyeongbuk UAM Future Aviation Forum Linked to National Strategy and Transportation Infrastructure" at the Daegu Scale-up Hub (DASH) on the 11th.
This forum was organized to share the development direction of urban air mobility by linking national future aviation policies with regional transportation and industrial infrastructure, and to establish demonstration projects and infrastructure construction strategies suitable for the Daegu and Gyeongbuk regions.
The event was jointly hosted by the DGIST UAM Project Group and ICT Research Division, along with the Daegu R&D Special Zone Headquarters and Daegu Technopark, while Daegu Metropolitan City, the Smart Drone Technology Center, and the Intelligent Automotive Parts Promotion Agency participated as sponsoring organizations.
At the forum, strategies for the development of future aviation utilizing local transportation conditions and industrial infrastructure were discussed intensively in line with the government's K-UAM commercialization policy. In particular, plans to integrate UAM with key infrastructure—including the Daegu-Gyeongbuk New Airport, the Daegu Industrial Line, metropolitan railway networks, and industrial complexes—were addressed as major agenda items.
The event proceeded in three sessions: ▲Response to regulatory and certification systems, ▲Demonstration projects and infrastructure construction, and ▲Integrated operation and control technology. Presenters shared key tasks for commercialization, such as strategies for the localization of public-type UAM aircraft, the establishment of a vertiport transfer system, and integrated control technology for safe operations.
Urban Air Mobility (UAM) is a three-dimensional mode of transportation that connects urban areas and airports using aircraft and advanced information and communication technology (ICT). It is evaluated as a future mobility solution with high potential for application in various fields, including disaster response and logistics services, as well as reducing travel times. In particular, the Daegu and Gyeongbuk regions possess favorable conditions for the introduction of UAM, such as the construction of a new airport, the expansion of wide-area transportation networks, and the concentration of industrial complexes; thus, they are garnering expectations to serve as a hub for innovating regional public services and fostering the future aviation industry.
Park Ji-ho, Head of the DGIST UAM Project Group, stated, "This forum was a venue to discuss practical implementation plans for integrating future aviation policies into regional transportation systems and industrial infrastructure." He added, "Based on DGIST's research and demonstration capabilities, we will identify public UAM models tailored to regional characteristics and actively contribute to the creation of a future aviation industry ecosystem."
Meanwhile, DGIST plans to expand its cooperative framework among Daegu City, relevant agencies, industry, and research institutes based on the opinions presented at the forum. Furthermore, the university intends to pursue follow-up projects—such as developing UAM demonstration routes, establishing vertiports, and advancing integrated operation and control technologies—by integrating artificial intelligence (AI), autonomous driving, robotics, sensors, communication, and data technologies.
