DGIST Selected for National AI Humanoid Research Project… Launches Development of Swarm-based Autonomous Collaboration Technology

DGIST is embarking on the development of next-generation robot technology in which multiple humanoid robots autonomously divide roles and collaborate to perform tasks.

DGIST (President Lee Kun-woo) announced that it has been finally selected for a new project under the "Promising New Technology Type (AI Humanoid Field)" category of the "Future Pioneering Convergence Technology Pioneer" initiative, promoted by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the National Research Foundation of Korea.

With this selection, DGIST will receive a total of 7.75 billion KRW in government research funding from 2026 to 2030 to pursue the development of core source technologies that enable autonomous collaboration among humanoid robots. The research will involve Senior Researcher Jin Yong-sik of the Robot AX Research Group at the Industrial AX Innovation Headquarters, as well as Professors Mok Ji-soo, Park Dae-hee, and Yoon Sung-hoon from the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.

The research team plans to focus on securing "swarm humanoid intelligence" technology, which enables multiple humanoids to share knowledge and experience accumulated during work processes and to collaborate by autonomously dividing roles even in complex environments.

Recently, humanoid technology has been evolving beyond the mobility and manipulation capabilities of individual robots to the stage of swarm intelligence, where multiple robots make decisions and cooperate simultaneously. In particular, there is a growing need for autonomous collaboration technology in actual industrial settings—such as manufacturing, logistics, facility operation, and disaster response—that allows multiple robots to share complex tasks and respond flexibly to unexpected situations.

Through this research, DGIST plans to develop technologies including autonomous work planning and role division utilizing Large-Scale Language Models (LLM), Visual Language-Behavioral (VLA)-based robot control, multi-sensor fusion environment perception, and digital twin-based learning and operation technologies.

Additionally, self-organization technology, which allows robots to autonomously adjust roles according to changing work environments, has been included as a core area of the research project. The goal is to realize an intelligent collaboration system capable of continuing operations even in the face of unexpected obstacles or equipment malfunctions. POSTECH and Seoul National University are participating in this research as joint and commissioned research institutions, while companies in the robotics and software sectors—Univa, Motomind, and Cosello—are also contributing to the R&D.

Based on industry-academia-research collaboration, DGIST plans to build a swarm control platform that integrates and manages multiple humanoids in a digital twin environment, and establish a demonstration environment for domestically produced humanoids to enhance the applicability of research results to industrial sites.

Jin Yong-sik, a senior researcher at DGIST’s Robot AX Research Group, stated, “This project is significant in that it realizes an intelligence where humanoids go beyond simply executing commands to sharing experiences and status information among robots and collaborating autonomously.” He added, “We will contribute to strengthening the competitiveness of the domestic humanoid industry by securing core source technologies that fuse AI, robotics, and control technologies.”

Meanwhile, DGIST is expanding research in future strategic fields, including ‘Physical AI’ that interacts with the physical environment, humanoids, and digital twins, and is focusing on developing technologies to build a next-generation industrial ecosystem where humans and robots coexist.
