포항시는 지난 24일 아시아태평양이론물리센터(APCTP)와 함께 일본 도쿄에 있는 CNRS 동북아오피스를 방문해 연구협력센터 설립 가능성과 향후 협력 방안에 대한 실무 협의를 진행했다고 밝혔다.

이번 협의는 지난 4월 개최된 제9차 한·불 과학기술공동위원회에서 APCTP와 CNRS 간 협력 확대 방안이 논의된 이후 추진된 후속 일정으로, 국제 공동연구 체계 구축을 위한 구체적인 협력 방안을 검토하는 자리로 마련됐다.

방문단은 CNRS 동북아사무소와 국제공동연구 운영기관을 찾아 연구협력센터 설립 가능성을 비롯해 국제공동연구실험실(IRL) 운영 사례, 공동연구 모델 구축, 연구자 교류 확대, 국제학술행사 개최 방안 등에 대해 의견을 교환했다.

포항시는 APCTP를 비롯해 POSTECH, 포항가속기연구소(PAL) 등 지역의 연구 인프라를 소개하며 국제 공동연구 수행 여건과 연구 협력 네트워크의 강점을 설명한 것으로 알려졌다.

CNRS는 프랑스 정부 산하 연구기관으로 수학과 물리학, 화학, 생명과학 등 다양한 기초과학 분야 연구를 수행하고 있으며, 세계적인 연구 성과를 바탕으로 국제 공동연구를 확대하고 있다.

이번 협력 논의의 핵심 기관인 APCTP는 1996년 설립된 국제이론물리 연구기관으로, 아시아·태평양 지역 연구기관들과 협력 네트워크를 구축해 다양한 공동연구 사업을 추진하고 있다.

포항시는 앞으로 APCTP와 함께 CNRS 측과 실무 협의를 이어가며 연구협력센터 설립 가능성을 검토할 계획이다. 또한 공동연구 과제 발굴과 국제학술행사 개최, 연구자 교류 프로그램 확대 등을 통해 국제 연구협력 기반을 단계적으로 구축한다는 방침이다.

특히 양자과학과 이론물리, 첨단소재, 인공지능(AI) 등 미래 전략기술 분야에서 국제 공동연구를 확대해 연구 경쟁력을 높이고 글로벌 협력 네트워크를 강화해 나갈 예정이다.

포항시 관계자는 “국제 연구기관과의 협력 확대는 지역 연구 역량을 높이는 중요한 계기가 될 수 있다”며 “관련 기관들과 협력을 지속해 국제 공동연구 기반 조성에 힘쓰겠다”고 말했다.
