유성찬 저자는 신간 'K-기후·에너지·환경 & 수소환원제철'(더봄)을 통해 기후위기와 산업 경쟁력을 함께 풀어낼 수 있는 해법을 제시한다. 기후와 에너지, 환경, 산업, 경제를 하나의 흐름으로 연결하며 탄소중립 시대 대한민국이 나아가야 할 방향을 시민의 눈높이에서 쉽게 설명한 책이다.

유 저자는 "기후위기는 환경 문제를 넘어 경제와 산업의 생존 문제"라며 "폭염과 산불, 가뭄, 홍수는 이미 우리의 일상이 됐고 세계 경제 질서도 탄소중립을 중심으로 빠르게 재편되고 있다"고 말했다.

그는 이러한 변화에 대응하기 위해서는 환경과 산업을 대립적인 관계로 바라보는 기존의 시각에서 벗어나야 한다고 강조했다.

"과거에는 환경 규제가 산업의 발목을 잡는다는 인식이 있었지만 이제는 친환경 기술을 선점하는 나라가 세계 시장을 선도하는 시대입니다. 기후를 지키는 일과 산업을 발전시키는 일은 서로 다른 길이 아니라 대한민국의 미래를 함께 만들어 가는 하나의 길입니다."

책에서 가장 비중 있게 다루는 주제는 '수소환원제철'이다. 그는 철강산업이 대한민국 제조업의 근간인 동시에 탄소배출이 많은 산업이라는 점에 주목했다.

유 저자는 "자동차와 조선, 건설, 기계산업 모두 철강을 기반으로 성장해 왔다"며 "석탄 대신 수소를 활용해 철을 생산하는 수소환원제철은 탄소배출을 획기적으로 줄이면서도 제조업 경쟁력을 유지할 수 있는 현실적인 대안"이라고 설명했다.

포항에서 태어나 산업화의 현장을 지켜본 경험도 책을 쓰게 된 중요한 배경이 됐다. 그는 "포항은 대한민국 산업화를 상징하는 도시이자 철강산업의 중심"이라며 "산업 발전의 소중함을 누구보다 잘 알고 있지만 이제는 지속가능한 발전을 고민해야 할 시점"이라고 말했다. 이어 "포항이 친환경 철강과 에너지 전환을 선도한다면 대한민국 산업의 새로운 미래를 열 수 있을 것"이라고 덧붙였다.

이 책은 기후위기의 원인과 대응 방안은 물론 탄소중립 정책, 재생에너지와 원자력, 수소경제, 전력시장 개혁, ESG 경영, 탄소국경조정제도(CBAM), 기후민주주의, 정의로운 전환 등 다양한 주제를 폭넓게 다룬다.

유 저자는 "기후위기 대응은 정부나 기업만의 과제가 아니라 시민 모두가 함께 참여해야 하는 사회적 전환"이라며 "기후민주주의와 정의로운 전환은 탄소중립 사회로 가기 위한 중요한 원칙"이라고 강조했다.

그는 이번 책이 전문가만을 위한 기술서가 아니라 일반 시민들도 쉽게 읽을 수 있는 교양서가 되기를 바란다고 했다.

"기후와 에너지 문제는 어렵게 느껴질 수 있지만 결국 우리의 일상과 미래를 결정하는 문제입니다. 시민과 기업인, 공직자, 연구자, 청년들이 함께 대한민국의 미래를 고민하는 계기가 되길 바랍니다."

한편 이해학 사단법인 이육사 이사장은 추천사를 통해 "유성찬 저자는 한 기업의 기술혁신을 넘어 국가 전력망 구축, 청정수소 공급체계, 기후시민회의와 기후민주주의에 이르기까지 거대한 공동체적 대전환 전략을 하나의 일관된 그림으로 제시하고 있다"며 "기후위기 시대를 살아가는 시민과 산업·지역의 미래를 고민하는 정책 결정자들에게 일독을 권한다"고 밝혔다.

유성찬 저자는 1964년 경북 포항에서 태어나 고려대학교 사회환경시스템공학을 전공하고 광운대학교 환경대학원에서 환경경영 석사학위를 받았다. 한국환경공단 관리이사와 남북환경협력추진위원장을 역임했으며 현재 국민에너지전국회의와 포항환경연대 공동대표를 맡고 있다.

Author Yoo Seong-chan presents solutions to address both the climate crisis and industrial competitiveness through his new book, *K-Climate, Energy, Environment & Hydrogen Reduction Steelmaking* (The Bom). The book connects climate, energy, environment, industry, and the economy into a single flow, explaining the direction Korea must take in the era of carbon neutrality in an accessible way for citizens.

Author Yoo stated, “The climate crisis is more than just an environmental issue; it is a matter of survival for the economy and industry.” He added, “Heatwaves, wildfires, droughts, and floods have already become part of our daily lives, and the global economic order is rapidly being reorganized around carbon neutrality.”

He emphasized that to respond to these changes, we must break away from the existing perspective that views the environment and industry as being in a confrontational relationship.

"In the past, there was a perception that environmental regulations held back industry, but now we are in an era where the country that preempts eco-friendly technology leads the global market. Protecting the climate and developing industry are not separate paths, but rather a single path that shapes the future of South Korea together."

The topic most heavily covered in the book is 'hydrogen reduction steelmaking.' He noted that the steel industry is the foundation of South Korea's manufacturing sector, yet it is also a high-carbon-emitting industry.

Author Yoo explained, "The automotive, shipbuilding, construction, and machinery industries have all grown based on steel," adding, "Hydrogen reduction steelmaking, which produces steel using hydrogen instead of coal, is a realistic alternative that can drastically reduce carbon emissions while maintaining manufacturing competitiveness."

His experience of being born in Pohang and witnessing the site of industrialization firsthand also served as a significant background for writing the book. He stated, "Pohang is a city that symbolizes South Korea's industrialization and is the center of the steel industry," adding, "While I understand the value of industrial development better than anyone, now is the time to consider sustainable development." He added, "If Pohang leads the way in eco-friendly steel and energy transition, it can open a new future for Korea's industry."

This book covers a wide range of topics, including the causes of the climate crisis and response measures, as well as carbon neutrality policies, renewable energy and nuclear power, the hydrogen economy, electricity market reform, ESG management, the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), climate democracy, and a just transition.

Author Yoo emphasized, "Responding to the climate crisis is not a task solely for the government or corporations, but a social transition in which all citizens must participate together," adding that "climate democracy and a just transition are important principles for moving toward a carbon-neutral society."

He expressed his hope that this book would serve as a general interest book that ordinary citizens can easily read, rather than a technical text intended only for experts.

"Climate and energy issues may seem difficult, but they ultimately determine our daily lives and future. I hope this serves as an opportunity for citizens, business leaders, public officials, researchers, and young people to contemplate the future of Korea together." Meanwhile, Lee Hae-hak, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Lee Yuk Sa Foundation, stated in his recommendation, "Author Yoo Seong-chan presents a strategy for a massive, communal transformation that extends beyond a single company's technological innovation to the construction of a national power grid, a clean hydrogen supply system, the Climate Citizens' Conference, and climate democracy, all within a single consistent picture." Author Yoo Seong-chan was born in Pohang, North Gyeongsang Province in 1964. He majored in Social and Environmental Systems Engineering at Korea University and received a Master's degree in Environmental Management from the Graduate School of Environmental Studies at Kwangwoon University. He served as a Managing Director at the Korea Environment Corporation and Chairman of the Committee for the Promotion of Inter-Korean Environmental Cooperation. Currently, he serves as a co-representative of the National Energy Council and the Pohang Environmental Solidarity.
