DGIST Develops AI Text Watermarking Technology ‘BREW’… Reliability Significantly Improved with 2% False Positive Rate
Researchers at DGIST have developed a next-generation watermarking technology that precisely identifies AI-generated text while drastically reducing errors where human-written text is mistakenly identified as AI.
A research team led by Professor Young-Sik Kim of the Department of Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering and the Major in Artificial Intelligence at DGIST (President Lee Kun-woo) announced the development of ‘BREW (Block-wise Reliable Embedding for Watermarking).’ This technology inserts invisible digital identification information into AI-generated documents and allows for the tracking of creation and source even if the text is altered.
This technology is attracting attention as a core foundational technology to address various social issues arising from the proliferation of generative AI, such as fake news, document forgery, and controversies surrounding AI-generated works.
Existing text watermarking technologies had limitations, such as reduced identification capabilities when sentences were altered or parts were modified, or false positives where ordinary text was mistakenly identified as an AI-generated document. BREW, developed by a DGIST research team, addresses these issues by applying a method that divides text into multiple blocks for independent analysis and tracks sentence change patterns. In particular, it is designed to reliably detect watermarks by restoring the original structure using "window-shifting" techniques, even if sentences are rearranged or distorted.
Experimental results showed that BREW maintained a detection performance of 96.5% even in environments with severe transformation, where approximately 10% of the entire sentence is replaced with synonyms. Furthermore, it demonstrated stable performance even with short texts of about 200 words and succeeded in reducing the false positive rate—the rate at which human-written documents are mistakenly identified as AI-generated—to approximately 2%.
Professor Young-Sik Kim of DGIST explained, "We have fundamentally improved upon the false positive issues of existing technologies and established a technical foundation capable of withstanding even malicious attempts at text tampering. It will play a key role in the field of AI forensics in the future, including the prevention of fake news and the protection of digital copyrights." This research was conducted jointly by DGIST graduate students Joeun Kim and Hoeun Kim and Professor Jin Dong-seop of Ulsan University, and the results have been accepted for ICML 2026, the most prestigious conference in the field of artificial intelligence. The research team plans to present the findings at COEX in Seoul this coming July.
Meanwhile, this research was carried out with support from the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Institute of Information and Communication Technology Planning and Evaluation (IITP) under the projects titled ▲Development of Quantum Safety Infrastructure Transition and Quantum Security Verification Technology and ▲Development of Core Security Technologies for V2X Wireless Communication Infrastructure to Protect Autonomous Vehicle Services.
