대구중구지역자활센터는 '공간페로 강아지 유치원·호텔 대구점'을 개소하고 지난 6월부터 본격적인 운영에 들어갔다고 밝혔다. 이번 사업은 전국 250개 지역자활센터 가운데 처음으로 강아지 유치원 형태를 도입한 사례다.

센터는 반려동물 양육 가구가 꾸준히 증가하는 사회적 변화에 맞춰 지역 맞춤형 서비스를 확대하는 한편, 자활사업 참여자들의 경제적 자립과 정서적 회복을 함께 지원하기 위해 이번 사업을 마련했다고 설명했다.

특히 1인 가구 증가와 사회적 고립 문제에 대응해 자활 참여자들이 반려동물을 돌보고 보호자들과 교류하는 과정에서 심리적 안정감과 성취감을 얻을 수 있도록 사업을 설계했다.

사업 추진을 위해 센터는 지난 4월부터 시설 내부 공사를 진행했으며, 참여 근로자를 대상으로 반려동물 관리와 돌봄에 필요한 전문 교육도 실시했다. 준비 과정을 거쳐 문을 연 강아지 유치원은 자활 참여자들에게 직무 역량을 키울 수 있는 일자리를 제공하는 동시에 지역 주민들에게는 전문적인 반려견 돌봄 서비스를 제공할 것으로 기대를 모으고 있다.

센터는 이번 사업이 단순한 고용 창출을 넘어 취약계층의 경제적 자립과 심리·정서적 회복을 함께 지원하는 사회서비스 모델로 자리 잡을 수 있도록 운영해 나갈 계획이다.
