구미시는 오는 7월 11일부터 12일까지 구포동 다온숲에서 '2026 구미 다온숲 수국&조각 축제'를 개최한다고 밝혔다. 이번 행사는 만개한 수국과 현대 조각, 공연, 체험 프로그램을 결합한 복합 문화축제로 운영된다.

가장 눈길을 끄는 프로그램은 미국 로스앤젤레스를 기반으로 활동하는 팝아트 작가 스티븐 해링턴의 조각 작품 전시다. 해링턴은 대표 캐릭터 '멜로(MELLO)'를 앞세워 독창적인 작품 세계를 구축했으며, 글로벌 기업들과의 협업은 물론 2028년 LA올림픽 공식 로고 프로젝트에도 참여한 현대미술 작가로 알려져 있다.

축제 기간 다온숲에는 해링턴의 조각 작품 'Reflections(비춤과 성찰)'이 설치돼 상설 전시된다. 작품은 자연과 인간의 공존을 주제로 구미의 생태적 이미지를 '멜로' 캐릭터에 담아 표현했으며, 기존 작업에서 주로 사용했던 색상 대신 금빛을 적용해 새로운 분위기를 연출한 것이 특징이다.

가족 단위 방문객을 위한 체험 행사도 다양하게 준비된다. 키다리 삐에로 공연을 비롯해 멜로 캐릭터 색칠하기, 화분 만들기, 도어벨 제작, 물총놀이 등 어린이와 부모가 함께 참여할 수 있는 프로그램이 운영된다.

축제 장소인 다온숲은 과거 생활폐기물 매립장이었던 공간을 도시숲으로 복원한 곳으로, 현재는 구미를 대표하는 녹지공간이자 수국 명소로 자리 잡았다. 2022년 개장 이후 수국 식재를 꾸준히 확대해 올해 새로 심은 5천여 본을 포함해 모두 42개 품종, 3만4천여 본의 수국이 조성돼 여름철 화려한 경관을 연출하고 있다.

행사 기간에는 노약자와 교통약자의 이동 편의를 위해 다온숲 내부를 순환하는 셔틀버스도 운행된다. 셔틀버스는 50분 운행 후 10분간 휴식하는 방식으로 운영될 예정이다.

김장호 구미시장은 "세계적인 작가와 지역 예술인들의 작품이 함께하는 이번 축제를 통해 시민과 관광객들이 다온숲의 자연과 문화예술을 동시에 즐기는 시간이 되길 바란다"며 "수국이 절정을 이루는 여름 숲에서 가족과 함께 특별한 추억을 만들었으면 한다"고 말했다.
