Daegu City Establishes Manufacturing Infrastructure for AI-Based Medical Fiber-Fusion Devices… Secures 6 Billion Won in State Funding
Daegu City is accelerating the localization of key medical materials and the stabilization of the supply chain by establishing a manufacturing infrastructure for medical fiber-fusion devices utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) technology.
Daegu City announced on the 6th that it has secured 6 billion won in state funding after being finally selected for the open competition for the project titled "Establishment of Manufacturing Infrastructure for Human Implantable Fiber-Fusion Devices Based on AI Manufacturing Processes," a detailed task under the "Project to Promote the Creation of an Open Bio-industry Ecosystem" promoted by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.
This project is led by the Korea Textile Development Institute, with participation from the Daegu Gyeongbuk Advanced Medical Industry Promotion Foundation (K-Medihub). A total of 10 billion won is scheduled to be invested from 2026 to 2030, including 6 billion won in state funding and 4 billion won in city funding. The core of this project lies in establishing a foundation for the domestic production of medical filament yarn, a key material for implantable fiber-fusion medical devices, which are currently reliant on imports from countries such as India and China.
Until now, domestic companies have struggled with commercialization despite developing functional medical yarns due to a lack of public production facilities that meet Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards. In response, Daegu City plans to build a platform capable of stably producing and supplying high-quality medical yarn by introducing AI-based manufacturing processes and quality prediction systems.
Through this, the city aims to establish an integrated manufacturing support system linking medical fiber materials to finished product production, and to promote the localization of high-value-added medical devices—such as artificial blood vessels, drug-eluting stents, and biodegradable mesh for tissue support—while securing a stable supply chain.
Upon completion of the project, a cleanroom compliant with GMP standards and medical filament yarn production facilities will be established at the Super Fiber Development Center within the Korea Textile Development Institute. In addition, a one-stop platform will be operated to support everything from yarn manufacturing and prototype production to preclinical trials, regulatory approval, and commercialization.
Key initiatives include: ▲ establishing GMP-compliant cleanrooms and medical yarn manufacturing facilities; ▲ developing AI-based manufacturing process optimization and quality prediction systems; ▲ supporting corporate prototype production, preclinical trials, regulatory approval, and commercialization; and ▲ providing technical support to local medical companies and training specialized personnel.
Daegu City expects that this project will combine the competitiveness of the local textile industry with the advanced medical industry, strengthen the domestic supply chain for medical textile materials, and help local companies enter global markets and create new jobs.
Kim Tae-woon, Director of the Future Innovation Growth Office at Daegu City, stated, "This project is a convergence of Daegu's core industries—textiles and the medical sector—using AI technology." He added, "We will actively support the localization of key medical textile materials to enhance the competitiveness of local companies and help Daegu grow into a leading city in the medical textile industry."
