Gumi City Launches AI-Based Transportation Innovation for National Industrial Complex… Investing 10.6 Billion Won to Build Intelligent ITS
Gumi City has secured 5.9 billion won in state funding after being selected for a public competition project by the Ministry of Science and ICT, and is set to begin constructing an AI-based intelligent transportation system to alleviate traffic congestion and strengthen logistics competitiveness within the national industrial complex.
The city announced that it was finally selected for the Ministry of Science and ICT's "On-Device AI Service Demonstration and Diffusion Project." A total of 10.6 billion won, including the 5.9 billion won in state funding, will be invested in this project to build future-oriented transportation infrastructure centered around the Gumi National Industrial Complex.
The project was established to enhance the efficiency of traffic and logistics operations within the national industrial complex and to address chronic congestion and safety issues. The core of the initiative is to further advance the existing Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) by integrating real-time signal operation utilizing AI technology, drone-based traffic monitoring, and a digital twin platform.
Gyeongbuk Technopark will oversee the project, with eight institutions, including the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) and the Korea Industrial Complex Corporation, participating jointly. The project period runs from July of this year to December 2027.
Gumi City plans to establish an AI signal control system utilizing smart intersections to automatically adjust traffic signals in response to changes in traffic volume and optimize traffic flow in real time. Through this, the city aims to reduce congestion in industrial complexes and major arterial roads and create a smoother traffic environment.
A drone control system will also be introduced. By utilizing drones, the city intends to rapidly assess traffic conditions in areas that are difficult to monitor solely through existing CCTVs and efficiently collect safety information, such as damage or the deterioration of road facilities.
In addition, a digital twin-based integrated control system will be established to visualize various information collected from the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) in a virtual space in real time, utilizing this data for traffic management and operational decision-making.
Gumi City expects this project to serve as an opportunity to enhance the overall competitiveness of the industrial complex's traffic environment, not only by resolving traffic congestion but also by improving logistics efficiency, preventing traffic accidents, and increasing the efficiency of road facility management. It also anticipates reaping socio-economic benefits, such as reduced travel times, lower fuel costs, and decreased carbon emissions.
Gumi Mayor Kim Jang-ho stated, "We will actively introduce advanced transportation technologies, including AI, to resolve traffic issues in industrial complexes and the city center, and create a transportation environment that citizens and businesses can experience firsthand." He added, "We will continue to identify smart transportation services tailored to regional characteristics and strive to realize a future-oriented transportation city."
