대구광역시는 7일 대구교육대학교 상록아트홀에서 (사)대구광역시지적발달장애인복지협회와 함께 ‘제30회 지적발달장애인의 날 기념한마당’을 개최했다고 밝혔다.

올해 30주년을 맞은 이번 행사에는 발달장애인과 가족, 장애인복지 관련 기관 관계자 등 500여 명이 참석해 발달장애인의 권리 보장과 사회적 인식 개선의 의미를 공유했다.

‘지적발달장애인의 날’은 매년 7월 4일로, 한국지적발달장애인복지협회 창립일과 유엔 총회가 채택한 ‘지적장애인 권리선언’의 의미를 기념하기 위해 제정됐다. 대구시는 발달장애인에 대한 올바른 이해 확산과 복지 향상을 위해 매년 기념행사를 이어가고 있다.

행사는 발달장애인 권리선언 낭독과 ‘자기권리 주장대회’ 수상자들의 발표로 시작됐다. 수상자들은 자신의 경험과 생각을 직접 전달하며 참석자들과 공감대를 형성했다.

이어 장애인 복지 증진과 인식 개선에 기여한 유공자에 대한 표창과 함께 ‘제18회 장애 인식 개선 작품 공모전’ 시상식도 진행됐다. 수상 작품들은 발달장애인에 대한 편견을 넘어 함께 살아가는 사회의 가치를 담아냈다.

행사장에서는 발달장애인과 비장애인이 함께 어울릴 수 있는 체험 프로그램도 운영됐다. 오는 21일까지 진행되는 작품 전시회에서는 ‘희망으로 표현하는 아름다운 세상’을 주제로 한 공모전 수상작을 선보이며, 포토존과 먹거리 나눔, 만들기 체험 부스 등 다양한 프로그램도 마련됐다.

이재홍 대구시 보건복지국장은 “30회를 맞은 이번 기념한마당은 발달장애인과 시민이 서로 이해하고 소통하는 의미 있는 시간이 됐다”며 “앞으로도 발달장애인의 권리 보호와 복지 향상을 위해 지역사회와 함께 노력하고, 장애에 대한 긍정적인 인식이 확산될 수 있도록 지속적으로 힘쓰겠다”고 말했다.

Daegu City Hosts ‘30th Day of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Commemorative Event’ for Rights and Communication

Daegu City has established a venue for communication to enhance social understanding of people with developmental disabilities and promote their rights.

Daegu Metropolitan City announced that it held the ‘30th Day of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Commemorative Event’ on the 7th at the Sangnok Art Hall of Daegu National University of Education, in collaboration with the Daegu Metropolitan City Association for the Welfare of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.

Marking its 30th anniversary this year, the event was attended by approximately 500 people, including people with developmental disabilities, their families, and officials from disability welfare organizations, who shared the significance of guaranteeing the rights of people with developmental disabilities and improving social awareness.

‘Day of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities’ is observed annually on July 4th and was established to commemorate the founding date of the Korea Association for the Welfare of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities and the significance of the ‘Declaration on the Rights of Persons with Intellectual Disabilities’ adopted by the UN General Assembly. Daegu City continues to hold commemorative events every year to spread a proper understanding of people with developmental disabilities and improve their welfare. The event began with the reading of the Declaration of Rights for People with Developmental Disabilities and presentations by the winners of the ‘Self-Advocacy Contest.’ The winners shared their personal experiences and thoughts, fostering a sense of shared understanding with the attendees.

This was followed by the awarding of commendations to individuals who contributed to the promotion of disability welfare and the improvement of public awareness, as well as the awards ceremony for the ‘18th Disability Awareness Improvement Art Contest.’ The winning works captured the value of a society where everyone lives together, transcending prejudices against people with developmental disabilities.

Experiential programs were also operated at the venue to allow people with developmental disabilities and those without to interact. An exhibition running until the 21st showcased the winning entries from the contest under the theme ‘A Beautiful World Expressed Through Hope,’ and various programs were prepared, including a photo zone, food sharing, and craft experience booths.

Lee Jae-hong, Director of the Health and Welfare Bureau of Daegu City, stated, “This commemorative event, marking its 30th anniversary, was a meaningful time for people with developmental disabilities and citizens to understand and communicate with each other.” He added, “We will continue to work together with the local community to protect the rights and improve the welfare of people with developmental disabilities, and we will make sustained efforts to spread a positive perception of disabilities.”
