시는 기초생활수급자가 양육하는 반려견과 반려묘를 대상으로 의료비를 지원하는 '사회적약자 반려동물 의료비 지원사업'을 본격 추진한다고 밝혔다. 이번 사업은 반려동물을 가족처럼 돌보고 있지만 경제적 사정으로 적절한 진료를 받기 어려운 가구의 부담을 줄이고 동물 복지 향상을 위해 마련됐다.

지원 규모는 모두 600마리이며, 이 가운데 100마리는 대한적십자사 대구광역시지사의 반려동물 보호·복지 모금사업을 통해 별도로 지원된다.

지원 대상은 동물등록을 마친 반려견 또는 반려묘를 키우는 기초생활수급자다. 질병 예방과 치료, 수술 등에 필요한 의료비의 80%를 지원하며, 가구당 1마리까지 최대 20만 원을 받을 수 있다. 신청은 7월 13일부터 주소지 관할 구·군 담당 부서나 행정복지센터에서 가능하다.

대구시는 사업의 지속성과 지원 확대를 위해 지난 8일 시청 산격청사에서 대한적십자사 대구광역시지사, 대구시수의사회와 '사회적약자 반려동물 의료지원 추진을 위한 민·관 협력 업무협약(MOU)'을 체결했다.

협약에 따라 참여 기관들은 취약계층 반려동물 의료비 지원을 비롯해 진료서비스 제공, 의료지원 정보 공유와 전문인력 협력, 수의사회 회원들의 의료봉사 참여 확대 등을 위해 상호 협력하기로 했다.

시는 이번 협약을 계기로 민간과 공공이 함께 참여하는 반려동물 의료복지 지원체계를 강화하고, 경제적 이유로 치료를 받지 못하는 반려동물의 의료 사각지대를 줄이는 데 도움이 될 것으로 기대하고 있다.

박기환 대구시 경제국장은 "이번 사업이 취약계층의 반려동물 양육 부담을 완화하고 반려동물의 건강 증진은 물론 유기동물 발생을 줄이는 데도 긍정적인 역할을 하길 기대한다"며 "앞으로도 민·관 협력을 확대해 사람과 동물이 함께 공존하는 반려동물 친화도시 조성에 힘쓰겠다"고 말했다.
