박용선 포항시장은 10일 포항 라한호텔에서 '2026 세계녹색성장포럼(WGGF)' 참석을 위해 방한한 아비아야 칼회이 크누센 북극경제이사회(AEC) 의장과 만나 북극항로 협력과 국제 교류 확대 방안을 논의했다.

이번 만남은 지난해 12월 포항시와 AEC가 체결한 업무협약과 올해 2월 노르웨이 트롬쇠에서 열린 '북극 프론티어 컨퍼런스'를 계기로 이어진 후속 협력의 일환이다. 특히 민선 9기 출범 이후 박용선 시장과 크누센 의장이 처음으로 가진 공식 면담이라는 점에서 의미를 더했다.

이날 포항시는 철강산업 중심 도시에서 수소연료전지 클러스터와 이차전지 국가첨단전략산업 특화단지를 기반으로 친환경 산업도시로 전환하고 있는 지역의 성장 전략을 소개했다. 양측은 지속가능한 산업 발전이라는 공통 목표를 바탕으로 협력 가능성을 확대해 나가기로 의견을 모았다.

포항시는 영일만항을 미래 북극항로 시대의 핵심 거점항만으로 육성하기 위한 협력 확대 필요성을 강조하는 한편, 올해 초 교류 의향을 확인한 노르웨이 트롬쇠시와의 협력 방안도 함께 논의했다.

또한 지역의 연구개발 역량을 활용해 친환경 에너지와 로봇, 해양과학기술 등 다양한 분야에서 도시 간 교류를 활성화할 수 있도록 AEC의 협조를 요청했다.

시는 지난해 체결한 업무협약의 실효성을 높이기 위해 포항시 공무원과 지역 대학생 등을 노르웨이 트롬쇠의 AEC 사무국에 파견하는 방안도 제안했다. 이를 통해 현지 정보 공유와 공동 프로젝트 발굴, 북극항로 관련 정책 협력을 지속적으로 확대해 나간다는 구상이다.

이에 대해 아비아야 칼회이 크누센 의장은 인적 교류 확대와 북극항로 협력, 트롬쇠시와 포항시 간 교류 지원 등에 공감하며 앞으로도 긴밀한 협력 관계를 이어가겠다는 뜻을 밝혔다.

박용선 포항시장은 "이번 면담을 계기로 북극경제이사회와의 협력이 실행 중심 단계로 한층 발전하는 계기가 마련됐다"며 "공동 포럼 개최와 인적 교류, 다양한 협력사업을 지속적으로 추진해 포항이 북극항로 시대를 선도하는 글로벌 해양도시로 성장할 수 있도록 힘쓰겠다"고 말했다.
