포항시는 15일 포스텍 체인지업그라운드에서 경상북도, 포항공과대학교(포스텍), KT, KT SAT, ㈜맵시와 'AI 기반 극지해양기술 개발 및 산업생태계 조성을 위한 업무협약'을 체결했다고 밝혔다.

협약식에는 박용선 포항시장과 양금희 경북도 경제부지사, 김철수 포항시의회 의장, 김성근 포스텍 총장, 성원제 KT 본부장, 박현배 KT SAT 전무, 조홍래 ㈜맵시 대표이사 등 관계자 50여 명이 참석했다.

이번 협약은 해양과 항만, 기상, 위성, 항로, 물류 등 다양한 분야의 데이터를 활용해 AI 기반 해양기술을 개발하고 관련 산업 기반을 구축하기 위해 마련됐다.

참여 기관들은 포스텍의 해양 AI·데이터 분석 기술과 KT의 AI·클라우드 기술, KT SAT의 위성통신 및 위성데이터, ㈜맵시의 AI 기반 항해 기술을 연계해 통합 플랫폼인 '오션 AI 파운드리(Ocean AI Foundry)'를 구축할 계획이다.

이를 통해 해양 데이터의 수집과 연계, 표준화는 물론 위성 기반 해양 모니터링과 선박 운항 지원 기술 개발 등 다양한 분야에서 공동 연구를 추진한다.

또 영일만항을 실증 거점으로 활용해 AI 기반 항로 분석과 항만 운영 최적화, 디지털트윈 기술 적용, 탄소배출 저감 기술 등 미래형 해양산업 기술 개발에도 협력할 예정이다.

포항시는 최근 북극항로가 기후변화와 글로벌 물류환경 변화에 따라 새로운 국제 해상 물류 축으로 주목받고 있는 만큼 AI와 위성, 데이터 기술을 접목한 극지해양기술 확보가 지역 해양산업 경쟁력 강화에 중요한 역할을 할 것으로 기대하고 있다.

협약식 이후에는 전문가 포럼도 열려 해양공학 연구개발 방향과 AI 기반 미래 선박기술, 극지해양기술 개발 전략 등을 주제로 의견을 교환했다.

박용선 포항시장은 "북극항로 시대에 대응하기 위해서는 AI 기반 해양기술과 이를 뒷받침할 산업 생태계 구축이 중요하다"며 "산학연과 협력을 확대해 영일만항을 중심으로 미래 해양산업을 선도하는 기반을 마련해 나가겠다"고 말했다.

Pohang City announced on the 15th that it signed a "Memorandum of Understanding for the Development of AI-Based Polar Ocean Technology and the Creation of an Industrial Ecosystem" with Gyeongsangbuk-do Province, Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH), KT, KT SAT, and MAPSY Co., Ltd. at the POSTECH Change-Up Ground.

Approximately 50 officials attended the signing ceremony, including Pohang Mayor Park Yong-sun, Gyeongsangbuk-do Vice Governor for Economic Affairs Yang Geum-hee, Pohang City Council Chairman Kim Cheol-su, POSTECH President Kim Seong-geun, KT Division Head Seong Won-je, KT SAT Executive Vice President Park Hyun-bae, and MAPSY CEO Cho Hong-rae.

This agreement was established to develop AI-based marine technologies and build a foundation for related industries by utilizing data from various fields, including oceans, ports, weather, satellites, shipping routes, and logistics.

The participating organizations plan to build an integrated platform called the "Ocean AI Foundry" by linking POSTECH's marine AI and data analysis technologies with KT's AI and cloud technologies, KT SAT's satellite communications and data, and MAPS's AI-based navigation technology.

Through this, they will pursue joint research in diverse fields, including the collection, linkage, and standardization of marine data, as well as the development of satellite-based marine monitoring and ship navigation support technologies.

Furthermore, they intend to cooperate on the development of future marine industry technologies, such as AI-based route analysis, port operation optimization, the application of digital twin technology, and carbon emission reduction technologies, by utilizing Yeongilman Port as a demonstration base. Pohang City expects that securing polar ocean technology, which integrates AI, satellite, and data technologies, will play a crucial role in strengthening the competitiveness of the local marine industry, as the Arctic Sea Route is recently garnering attention as a new hub for international maritime logistics due to climate change and shifts in the global logistics environment.

Following the signing ceremony, an expert forum was held to exchange views on topics such as the direction of marine engineering research and development, AI-based future ship technology, and strategies for developing polar ocean technology.

Pohang Mayor Park Yong-sun stated, "To respond to the era of the Arctic Sea Route, it is essential to establish AI-based marine technology and an industrial ecosystem to support it." He added, "We will expand cooperation with industry, academia, and research institutes to lay the foundation for leading the future marine industry, centered around Yeongilman Port."
