포항시는 20일 광명일반산업단지에서 글로벌 AI 데이터센터 착공식을 열고 AI 산업 핵심 기반시설 조성 사업을 본격적으로 시작했다고 밝혔다.

착공식에는 박용선 포항시장과 김철수 포항시의회 의장을 비롯해 지역 시·도의원, 사업 투자사인 네오AI클라우드와 시공사인 현대건설 관계자, 지역 대학과 연구기관, 주민 등 200여 명이 참석해 사업의 성공적인 추진을 기원했다.

이번 사업은 광명일반산업단지에 총 2조 원 규모의 민간 투자를 통해 추진된다. 1단계로 40메가와트(MW)급 AI 데이터센터를 건립하며, 2027년 준공을 목표로 하고 있다.

1단계 사업이 완료되면 향후 약 260MW 규모로 시설을 확대하는 2단계 확장 계획도 추진될 예정이다. 시는 이를 통해 포항을 국내 AI 연산 인프라의 핵심 거점으로 육성한다는 구상이다.

사업 추진 과정에서는 행정 지원 체계도 가동됐다. 포항시는 부시장을 단장으로 하는 '인허가 패스트트랙 TF'를 운영해 전력계통영향평가와 산업단지계획 변경, 입주 승인, 건축허가 등 주요 인허가 절차를 지원했다. 이후 전력계통영향평가 비기술심사와 기존 건축물 철거, 시공사 선정 등을 거쳐 본공사 착공에 이르렀다.

데이터센터가 들어서면 포항의 철강·이차전지 산업 기반과 POSTECH, 한동대학교, 포항산업과학연구원(RIST), 한국로봇융합연구원(KIRO) 등 연구기관이 연계돼 AI 기반 산업 생태계 조성에 기여할 것으로 전망된다.

시는 제조업의 AI 전환을 비롯해 AI 서비스와 데이터 산업 활성화, 전문인력 유치, 청년 일자리 창출, 지역경제 활성화 등 다양한 파급효과를 기대하고 있다.

박용선 포항시장은 "글로벌 AI 데이터센터 착공은 포항 산업 구조를 한 단계 도약시키는 출발점"이라며 "기업과 기술, 인재가 함께 성장하는 산업 생태계를 구축해 포항을 대한민국을 대표하는 AI 산업 중심도시로 육성해 나가겠다"고 말했다.

The establishment of the data center is expected to contribute to the creation of an AI-based industrial ecosystem by linking Pohang’s steel and secondary battery industry base with research institutions such as POSTECH, Handong University, the Pohang Institute of Industrial Science and Technology (RIST), and the Korea Institute of Robotics and Convergence (KIRO).
